The agent for free-agent guard Latrell Sprewell said talks with the Lakers are ongoing. The Lakers still have half of their $5 million midlevel exception after signing Aaron McKie. A sign-and-trade would bring Sprewell a larger payday, but the Lakers are unlikely to go that route. Detroit also is interested, agent Robert Gist said, but Sprewell wants a starting job.

Negotiations between the Bulls and restricted free agent center Eddy Curry are already messy and may only get messier. The team is exploring what options it has to require Curry to take a DNA test before practice begins Oct. 4, whether Curry eventually accepts the Bulls' contract offer or signs the one-year qualifying offer worth $5.14 million. A DNA test was recommended by Minneapolis-based cardiologist Dr. Barry Maron and others as a way to see if Curry is genetically disposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a potentially fatal condition when combined with arrhythmia.

The hunt for a backup point guard continues with former Chicago Bulls rookie star Jay Williams the one player the Raptors most covet. Williams, whose NBA career nearly ended as a result of a motorcycle accident after his rookie season (2002-03), is said to be about 85% healthy. He has worked out for the Raptors, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets.

Raptors malcontent Eric Williams reportedly has decided that life in Toronto is not quite as bad as serving time in a Siberian Gulag. Raptors general manager Rob Babcock said yesterday he had a positive and constructive talk with the hard-nosed forward over the summer and, in a surprising development, added that Williams wouldn't mind remaining with the Raptors, who are embarking on a youth kick.

Instead of bemoaning the loss of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, the Nets see their summer as a success. They got bigger. They got more offensive. And they got decidedly deeper. "From an offensive standpoint, it's probably the deepest team we've had since [2001-02]," team president Rod Thorn said yesterday.

Second-round draft pick Bracey Wright impressed the Timberwolves enough to warrant a partial guarantee of his first-year rookie salary of about $350,000, and if he remains with the team this season, he'll get an additional year on his contract.

The Timberwolves are still trying to sign Rex Chapman as a college scout.

The NBA will announce at a midday news conference Wednesday in Oklahoma City that the Hornets will play the bulk of their home schedule this season at that city's Ford Center. The team and the league will announce the Hornets will play 35 games in Oklahoma City and six in Baton Rouge at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus, though three of those scheduled sometime in March could be moved to New Orleans Arena if repairs to the facility can be made.
