Several scouts who have watched numerous Sixers games, especially the games with Chris Webber in uniform believe his abilities have diminished. "Webber's done," one scout for a Western Conference team said. "By that I mean athletically. On one leg, he can play better than most power forwards in this game. He's an exceptional passer. He can still rebound, too. But he can't do much against anyone who's athletic at his position."

Lamar Odom is eager to become Kobe Bryant's sidekick with the new-look Los Angeles Lakers. And a lot more. Scottie Pippen, once an acclaimed sidekick himself, is lending a hand in that direction at the behest of Phil Jackson, his former coach in Chicago. Jackson said Wednesday there's a good possibility Odom will play every position at one tie or another this season, including center.

Eddy Curry touched down in Charleston early last night, strolling into the team hotel at 8 p.m., a strong indication he received passing grades on his battery of heart tests. Curry is expected to continue his physical today with a team orthopedist, not related to the heart issue.

Vince Carter is so excited about the Nets' prospects this season, he's feeling like a rookie again, volunteering to play some minutes at power forward if necessary. This season, Carter won't have to carry the scoring load. Unlike last season when he scored 30 or more points 24 times, Carter will have a healthy Richard Jefferson at his side and more weapons around him than he has ever had.

The Pistons will apparently meet with Tayshaun Prince's agent, Bill Duffy, to finalize the fourth-year small forward's contract extension as soon as Duffy can arrange it into his schedule. The two sides have until Oct. 31 to sign a long-term extension or Prince will become a restricted free agent next summer.

Michael Coyne, agent for Nuggets center Nene, declined to comment on a possible contract extension for the 6-foot-11 Brazilian. The Nuggets face an Oct. 31 deadline to extend his contract or he becomes a free agent next summer. Nene has a bargaining advantage knowing Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire and Houston's Yao Ming have agreed to extensions. That leaves Detroit's Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince, Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic and not much else among free-agent forwards next summer.

Ray Allen's breathing was a topic of conversation at Sonics camp on Wednesday, in ways literal and tactical. He underwent a CT scan during the afternoon hours, with hopes of establishing a cause and treatment for sinus congestion he has experienced over the past three weeks. Indications were that the likely sources (benign polyps) do not constitute a serious health concern.

Hornets coach Byron Scott said it was his decision to ban backup forward George Lynch from training camp. During Monday's Media Day, Lynch made a request to be traded because he wants to play for a contending team. Lynch is in the final year of his contract with the Hornets.

No more dribbling the ball endlessly through a possession. No more frantic shots as the 24-second clock expires. That's coach Bernie Bickerstaff's goal for the Charlotte Bobcats' second season. With three up-tempo point guards, he wants his team looking for baskets earlier in possessions
