At least one NFL team has found out that it won't need the luck of the Irish to lure away Charlie Weis from Notre Dame. Weis' six-year contract at Notre Dame includes a modest $1.5 million buyout. The buyout means that, despite the fact that he has one of the country's most heralded recruiting classes coming in next season, Weis has positioned himself to leave Notre Dame after this season for the NFL if he so chooses. Should Weis cap Notre Dame's impressive season with a win over Tennessee and then another win in a major bowl game, he could vault himself into the No. 1 coaching prospect on the radar of NFL owners. Even if Texas emerges unscathed from the regular season, there lurks the possibility that it would not earn a Rose Bowl berth. That's thanks to the arcane ways of the Bowl Championship Series rankings: specifically, the possibility that the Longhorns ultimately will be penalized either in the polls or in the computer component of the BCS for an apparently diluted Big 12 Conference and an overall schedule that may mean they faced only two ranked teams (Ohio State and Tech) before the bowls. The prevailing thought is that Texas' standout quarterback Vince Young could be staying -- even though he is playing like one of the top picks in the draft. The only way Young would leave is if Texas could win the national championship. One person close to the Texas program predicted Young will be staying. And the reason is this: In the eight years that Mack Brown has run the Texas program, no top prospect has ever left school early. Texas quarterback Vince Young refuses to get drawn into the Who's No. 1 debate. He's satisfied with the Longhorns' No. 2 ranking behind top-ranked USC for now. "We'd like to get a chance to play them at the end of the year and see what happens," he said. Josh Pinkard, a sophomore who moved from safety to cornerback during practice last week, could start for top-ranked USC against Washington State, Coach Pete Carroll said Sunday. Pinkard played the new position on Saturday after cornerback John Walker suffered an ankle sprain late in the first quarter of USC's 51-24 victory over Washington at Seattle. Carroll said Walker remained sore and that he was questionable for this Saturday's. |
