While the Mets worked frantically to finalize the Billy Wagner contract, it prevented them from making any progress with Bengie Molina. As of last night, Met GM Omar Minaya still had not returned a phone call that Molina's agent, Alan Nero, had left on Monday morning. Nero intends to make a counter-offer when he speaks with Minaya.

The Yankees are looking at possible trades, with Bubba Crosby as a fall-back option. The Yankees are one of many teams to express interest in Tampa Bay's speedy Joey Gathright, and while the Devil Rays are thought to be sorting through trade partners, the Yankees have little of the young talent Tampa Bay seeks.

Talks between the Phillies and Tom Gordon have reached a serious stage. Gordon pitched as a setup man for the New York Yankees last season, but he wants to be a closer again. The Phillies have made an offer, but Gordon would like a three-year deal. The Phillies prefer a two-year contract.

The Rangers have an offer out to Octavio Dotel and have expressed interest in Kyle Farnsworth, Jason Grimsley, Braden Looper and Felix Rodriguez. They have considered Jose Mesa, who had 27 saves as the Pittsburgh Pirates closer last season but has told the Rangers that he would consider an eighth-inning role as well. The Rangers also have shown interest in the Rockies' Byung-Hyun Kim as well as Brian Moehler and Jason Johnson.

Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said the soaring salaries of relief aces will have little bearing on the club's valuation of Trevor Hoffman, the longtime Padres closer who is on the free-agent market. Hoffman's leverage could be on the rise, however, if recent deals for closers influence other clubs.

The Phillies, looking to make the dimensions at Citizens Bank Park more neutral to hitters and pitchers, plan to remove the first two rows of seats in left field. That will move the warning track and fence back five feet and raise the fence from eight feet high to 101/2 feet. Major League Baseball is looking at those plans, but they are expected to be approved.
