Nothing says football like a helmet. Though the size and shape are the same for every team, the design is what sets schools apart and give them an identity. For years, Syracuse boasted a no frills, all-orange helmet, but recently gave itself a makeover and added a blue stripe down the center and the player's number on one side. Notre Dame, meanwhile, has stuck with the same all-gold helmet since the days of Knute Rockne. For one day, we ask you to forget all allegiances to a particular school and tell us who has college football's best helmet. Is it Florida State's garnet-and-white spear on a gold background? Clemson's tiger paw? Texas's steer with the famous hook 'em horns symbol? Perhaps you can find something better here. Tell us what you think? -- Andy Gray (Wed 11:30 a.m.)
Penn State, hands down. The old school look with the stripe and no names on the uniforms. Nobody's better.
Though I'm not a Michigan fan I believe nothing says college football like the their football helmets.
Although i grew up here in the south i would have to go with Arizona State and their mascot Sparky.
Is any other helmet more widely recognized than the Michigan's? The winged design has been on the Wolverines' helmets since 1938. Even other sports at Michigan have incorporated the design in their headwear and uniforms.
Texas's helmet - unique and easily recognizable - as well as the hook 'em horns symbol being the only one - all the opponents show respect by doing the upside down horns - even on their cars, without any other sticker showing their loyalty
Virginia Tech's marroon helmet has the sparkles that give it a shine. It also has possibly the most accidental double meaning logo in football. As an engineering school, what's better than having a math problem on your helmet! The VT looks like "square root of 1"! Quite a smart and proud university.
Florida State definitely has the best helmets, and uniforms. Home Garnet Jersey, Gold Pants, and I think their away White Jersey with Garnet pants are pretty sweet. Thanks to the donation by Burt Reynolds.
The University of Alabama by far. It's a classic look that hasn't changed. Crimson helmet, a white stripe, white numbers, and a gray face mask. -- Walter, Davenport, IA (2:03 p.m.)
I am a huge OSU beaver fan and dislike the Oregon Ducks, but man the Ducks helmets are the best hands down!!!
No other school can spot good players just by looking at their helmets. Ohio State and their buckeye leaves is the original, and still best, "award helmet" in football. -- Aaron, Cleveland, OH. (2:05 p.m.)
Here in Mountaineer country, I have to give the nod to Florida State. The spear graphic, if done improperly, might make them look too much like a pro team. But it's done just right, and helps make FSU one of the great college teams. On the other end of the spectrum, South Florida's unis make them look like a fictional team, something out of "Any Given Sunday" or "Coach". Or worse, the USFL.
NC STATE has an awesome helmet. White with a red block 'S' highlighted with black. -- Shawn, Washington D.C. (2:07 p.m.)
Even though I am a die-hard Georgia fan and love their helmets, I think the best looking helmet belongs to Colorado. You've got to love the gold and the black buffalo.
Is there any question that it's The U (University of Miami)? The letter has nothing really to do with the school, and it's still one of the defining images of college football. -- Danny, Miami, Fl. (2:09 p.m.)
No doubt about the imposing, yet simple style of Penn State. Just a big thick blue line down the middle and the whiteness that encompasses the rest of the helmet represents years of tradition and glory.
Best helmet that you've never seen....I-AA Colgate University. A Maroon helmet with white scripted 'Gate on the side is a classic from a school that has been playing football for over 100 yrs!
I love old school. Peen State is an obvious choice, but my vote is for the University of Alabama. You just can't touch the tradition.
I think WVU's helmet deserves some consideration because what we had prior to the Flying "WV." In the pre-Don Nehlen era, WVU's helomet was white with the outline of the state. HIDEOUS! But the Blue helmet with Gold Flying WV is classy looking, especially, in comparison. -- Paul, Falling Waters, WV (2:16 p.m.)
Michigan's helmet would in fact be the best in college football if they in fact had originated that style on the helmet. That original design comes from Princeton where the first college game was played. To give credit where credit is due, Princeton is to thank for that helmet.
IIowa's football helmet is about as simple and as slick as they come. Thank you Hayden for the Tiger Hawk. -- Brodie, Davenport, IA (2:18 p.m.)
Best College Football Helmet: The "Golden Dome" of the Notre Dame's Fighting Irish sybolizes greatness - no need for fancy symbols or letters.
Hard to argue with Florida State, Penn State or Michigan, or even Ohio State. But one of the worst has to be Texas. The white helmet without a stripe looks like a marshmellow. -- CA, Forney, TX. (2:21 p.m.)
LSU Tigers, old school and informative?
Even though Notre Dame's helmets are a solid color, it is the fact that they are painted before every game in a ritualized setting with actaul gold in the paint. Does any team pay that much attention or love their helmets so much? Also, they do not tarnish them with those darn ego stickers. -- Scott, Atlanta, GA. (2:22 p.m.)
There's no doubt that the Alabama Crimson Tide has the best helmet and uni's in all of college football!!! Each helmet has that person's number on both side in white numbers on an all crimson helmet with a single large stripe going down the middle. Fans from rival schools have even stated that they like Bama's helmet and uni's and you know that is saying something when other SEC schools are complimenting other SEC school's helmets and uni's!!! Great Alabama championship teams wore those same designs back in the day and the future championship teams will wear those same designs! -- Jason, Warner Robbins, GA. (2:25 p.m.)
Its a tie. Between Michigan, Notre Dame, and Alabama. -- Donald, Atlanta, GA (2:29 p.m.)
It is hard to argue with the traditional college helmets, but when looked at as a great helmet it is hard to argue with Colorado State.
Utah has the best helmet. The perfect blend of simplicity, color and logo design. -- Steve, Twinsburg, OH. (2:38 p.m.)
THE U baby! Followed closely by Meee sheegan
UD Flyers, best helmet and best team in I-AA. -- Steve, Pittsburgh, PA.(2:54 p.m.)
1.ALABAMA 2.FLORIDA STATE 3.LSU 4.TEXAS TECH
While there are several great helmets out there that have remained unchanged forever it seems and embody the tradition of college footaball, i.e. Texas, Penn State, USC, Alabama, and Notre Dame, the ULTIMATE helmet when it comes to college football is Michigan, and it isn't even close. And that's coming from a graduate of both Southern Cal and Texas. -- Nick, Houston, TX. (3:306p.m.)
North Carolina's helmet is overlooked for it's color (sky blue with white outlined in black) and it's simple design of the interlocking NC. Although I like the Michigan Helmet as well, same goes for the Deleware Blue Hens. -- Charlie, Brooklyn, NY (3:07 p.m.)
Personally, I think Auburn's helmets are the best in the SEC (which means the best in all the land.)
I AM SICK OF HEARING ABOUT PENN STATE'S HELMETS. THEY ARE THE MOST BORING HELMETS IN ALL OF FOOTBALL -- Josiah, Grand Rapids, MI (3:09p.m.)
Who has the best college football helmet?...Arizona State baby! At least it's not some lame "A" on their helmet.
If anyone voted for Michigan, then you must really be voting for Princeton. Michigans former Head Coach brought the design to Ann Arbor from Princeton where he previously voted. Therefore, I am voting for Penn State. Classic and original.
Washington State has got to be considered. They have two helmets (home and away) that are unlike any others in any league of football.
How can anybody vote for Michigan helmets? They are stolen. -- Alan, Potomac, MD (3:13 p.m.)
Personally, I think Auburn's helmets are the best in the SEC (which means the best in all the land.1. Penn State, Solid White Old School says it all. 2. Notre Dame 3. Alabama Crimson Tide 4. Michigan 5. Florida State 6. Texas 7. Nebraska 8. Miami 9. Ohio State 10. Kansas circa 1988 w/ Jayhawk on helmet
Clemson University easily has the best helmet in Div-1A. The tiger paw on the helmet is an actual paw print from a real tiger. How cool is that? -- Derek, Raleigh, N.C (3:18p.m.)
Hands down the best helmet in college football is UVA. With the V and crossing swords on it. The blue and orange mix great together and it is still not complex. UVA gets my vote. -- Mike, Fairfax, VA. (3:30 p.m.)
That big W on the Washington Huskies helmet takes the cake.
Granted, I'm a total homer, but I wouldn't trade the University of Oregon helmets for anything. The freakin' things change colors in the sun! Plus, the "O" is actually an ariel view of that "house of horrors", Autzen Stadium. Thank you Phil (Knight)! -- Brian, Eugene, OR(3:35p.m.)
The best helmet is Michigan States, its such a nice green...
Washington State's logo is a brilliant design. (They have a quality fight song, too.) I think too many people like logos that have been around forever and simply assume they're great because of it, i.e. Penn State or Alabama, without considering if the logo and the color scheme are original or inventive or descriptive. With Washington State's, you get both, and they're done in a flashy crimson and gray.
Penn St. has got the best helmets by far, with the Tide close behind. Nothing beats the classic look. Texas A&M's are pure garbage.
The purple Kansas State Power Cat on a classic silver is by far the best helment in college football. A modern, yet aggressive look. My least favorite is Michigan, it looks like they are wearing a jock strap on their head. I think K. State is one of the uglier helmets out there. Also ugly, Illinois. It's so boring
What is the story with this Princeton-Michigan thing. I have seen photos of both helmets back to the 50's and Michigan's is the same similar style while Princeton had a number on their helmet at one time and then some form of tiger for awhile. Who stole from who? Here's the Princeton-Michigan helmet deal. Princeton Coach Herbert O. 'Fritz' Crisler designed the winged look so his quarterback could easily identify receivers downfield. When Crisler left Princeton for Michigan in 1938 he brought the design with him.
The best helmet (and uniform for that matter) belong to my school, U.C.Berkeley,the California Golden Bears. -- Bruce, Sacramento, CA. (4:08 p.m.)
What about Arkansas? The running Razorback on the red helmets is a classic...not to mention there's fewer mascots in all of sports scarier than a razorback.
I agree with you on the K-State helmet. If they had a purple facemask, it would look a lot better. The best helmets are Notre Dame's and UCLA's. Nice, simple and full of tradition.
I think that Minnesota State-Moorhead's helmets are the coolest in all of D1 and D2, nothing beats the crazy dragon.... -- Brian, Sioux Falls, SD (4:19 p.m.)
About the helmet rant, Kentucky has the best looking helmets. Come on now, they need to win this, they sure as heck can't win on the field.
Kansas combines best 3 colors on their relatively new helmets - dark blue with a single red stripe and contrasting white KU on the sides is striking yet simple! Ole Miss is a close second. -- Ray, Detroit, MI (4:23 p.m.)
I was born and raised a Notre Dame fan and love their helmets. But, I really love the Oregon State beaver. He looks like he could give you rabies with one bite!
Definitely the WYOMING COWBOYS!! I may be a little biased as an alum and native to the state. However, in all of my travels people consistently recognize Steamboat the Bucking Horse and his rider. GO POKES!!!
So what if Michigan copied the design. The colors of Michigan make the helmet design better than the Princeton colors. The question is not who has the most original. The question is who has "college football's best helmet" -- Derrick, Kalamazoo, MI (4:28 p.m.)
I'd like to nominate some worst helmets - how about several Big East squads - UConn and Rutgers - both recently changed to those designs. Where is the ingenuity in those designs? The Pre-2005 Pitt helmet was just atrocious. And Louisville's Cardinal is so cartoonish it's pathetic. | |||
