ONLY AT KANSAS: Lawrence is the final resting place of the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith, and legendary coach Phog Allen, so show some respect and lay a wreath of nylon on their graves. AFTER 2 A.M.: Get your slice fix at Wheel Pizza Company, where you get honey to put on the thick crust. EAT IT: Head to Yelo Sub, just a two-minute walk from campus, for toasted hero goodness. RULE #82: The beer in grocery stores is all watered-down. BARS: The Hawk, the Wheel and the Bull are three popular bars near campus, the latter with a long counter down the middle for pong and flip cup. GETTING AROUND: Streets are named for states and are laid out east to west in the order they were admitted to the Union, from Delaware to Iowa. Massachusetts, home of the town founders, is the main drag. TICKET MASTER: Kansas has no law against ticket scalping. Buy 'em on street corners near the football stadium and the basketball field house. PREGAME: Hit "the Hill," the only public area on campus where booze is allowed on football game days. POSTGAME: After big KU football wins (rare) students carry the goal posts to Potter Lake for a swim. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Football, Oct. 29: Missouri comes into town for the Border Showdown. Football, Nov. 5: The Cornhuskers have beaten the Jayhawks 37 straight games, but last season an improved KU squad lost in Lincoln by only six points. KU-UK hoops, Jan. 7: Two of the winningest programs in college hoops square off. Wakarusa music festival, June 16-19: 60+ bands turn Lawrence into alt/country heaven. PACK YOUR: Walking shoes. | |||||||
