Virginia Tech proved once again that it is one of the nation's elite teams with an impressive 30-10 victory over Boston College last Thursday. One area the Hokies could have used some help in, however, was their uniforms. Teams are experimenting more with new looks, and in Tech's case, it didn't work so well. The same could be said for Florida, which was impressive in a 14-10 upset of No. 4 Georgia, but sported ugly orange-sleeved jerseys for the first time. The uniforms of college football teams are one of the few things about the game that (usually) stays the same despite the revolving door of players who wear them. In honor of Halloween, we ask you which team has the best uniforms in college football. Our pick is Michigan's maize and blue. What is yours? -- Andy Gray (Mon 11:30 a.m.)
Absolutely no team comes close to the tradition inspired by the team in Ann Arbor. The winged helemt makes no statement as to what team it represents, yet everyone in college football knows who is coming into town. The maize and blue is simple and never needs a change to make it stand out. Great choice.
Penn State is the pick for best uni in College football. Especially when they're on the road. the white jerseys make the get-up even plainer.
USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State. In that order. Best uniform shouldn't mean flashiness, it should scream COLLEGE FOOTBALL; toughness, dominance, classiness, and speed.
Maize and blue? You have got to be kidding me. Ohio State's Scarlet and Gray are the best looking uniforms in college football and always have been. BTW- we're the ones who started the tradition of awarding Buckeye leafs on helmets for big plays made.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have the best uniform in college football. As a shout out to the old Steele Curtain of the Steelers hey-day...Iowa is an intimidating force.
Wow, you guys must really have it in for the Buckeyes recently. First picking Ginn as your most overrated on Friday, and now picking hated Michigan (whose jerseys are just plain disgusting, by the way) as best uniform. Ohio State has one of the best (and most classic) uni's out there. Scarlet and gray, nothing flashy, with the silver helmets (and who can forget the buckeye leaves?!). I'd have to say runners-up (but a little ways behind) would be Northwestern, Notre Dame's green, UCLA, and Hawaii. At the bottom of the list would be Michigan, Oregon, Purdue/Georgia Tech, and Syracuse, Tennessee.
I think Notre Dame has the best uniform in all of college football. There is just something magical about them. The gold helmets, the clean, traditional look. So many teams have these new, crazy looking uniforms and it's nice to see one team sticking with tradition.
Texas Tech and U of Texas sport excellent looking home uniforms. Plus both have really cool insignia on thier helmets, Texas Tech with the classic double TT and Texas with the longhorn. Tech also has the best colors, red and black.
Before people jump down the throat of UF and VT, those uniforms were 1 time nike promotions for those 2-tone undershirts. I personally think that UF has a rather classic jersey that is up there with the likes of michigan and penn state. VT's aren't bad either. The Miami style jersey that many teams are using now are the real assualt on coligate on field fashion.
Penn State and the ultra-boring uniforms are the best college football, or for that matter, any sport has to offer. Notre Dame is a close second along with the the burnt orange of Texas. As for Michigan, how can any uniform whose primary feature, the tacky winged helmet, is stolen from another school, remember Princeton came up with the design, possibly even be considered.
Wyoming has the best uniforms. Who else wears such a great shade of brown? And the helmet is a classic also.
The new BYU uniforms are great. They're also a huge step up from those abominations they've worn for the past few years. Oregon should now follow their lead and stop dressing like a football team from 2000 years in the future.
Most people would not agree, but the Oregon Yellow, "Highlighters". No other uniform gets the publicity that those bright, eye hurting uniforms do. Most people have no clue where Oregon is, but they know those uniforms.
The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley have the best uniforms in the land. The Red and Green combo is both unique and sleek.
I blame Nike. They always feel the need to change every "Nike school's" uniform in order to sell more merchandise and eventually end up with disasters like what we saw with Virginia Tech and Florida this week, and what we have seen in the past (Oregon yellow unis?). They need to learn to leave well enough alone.
I'm a Michigan fan so I'm going to argue with you about that call. I also am very fond of syracuse's uni's this year, especially the number on the helmets, although the team itself is awful. I also would cast a vote for USC's uni's. I'd be intimidated by any team wearing the trojan's burgandy and yellow. I agree that Va. Tech's and Fla. uni's were over doing it, but Miami's throwback's were impressive, I liked how they had the hurricane warning flag on the helmets.
The crimson and gold of Harvard has always served the seven-time National Champions well. A classic, majestic look, worn by some of the finest scholar-athletes in the country.
The UCLA home uniforms with the ligth blue jerseys are the best looking in college. It's funny how none of the "new wave" uniforms are really considered.
No one touches the Crimson Tide for classiest uniforms. Just a classic look.
Georgia has the best uniforms in college football. The red helmet and jersey along with the famed silver britches, and of course the trademark power G.
The best uniforms belong to University of Colorado and UCLA. CU's black jersey with the "Colorado" script across the chest with the gold helmets just says "tough." The baby blue jersey and gold helmet of the Bruins is a classic.
I vote for Tufts - powder blue and brown. Of course their mascot is the elephant so they didn't have a lot to work with but they could have chosen a nice wrinkly gray.
The Penn State Nittany Lions have the best uniforms college football; partial to growing up 45 min. from Happy Valley. However, ND, USC, Michigan, 'Bama, and Nebraska would be there too; all schools with tradition, class, and championships. These unis stand out for two reasons: these schools haven't allowed Phil Knight and Nike to "Nike-ize" them and they don't have to put a buckeye, a dog bone, or a tomahawk to recognize their abilities. The colors and fatigues say it all.
The best uniforms in college football hands down is Miami. They are pure class and style. With Florida close behind with the one sleeve coloring. The Ugliest is USC Trojans, the colors just clash, I dont care how good they are.
Now it might be a little of the "homer" in me coming out, but you have to show some respect for the garnet and gold of Florida State. Nobody has a cooler helmet than the spear with all of those tomahawks over it. It's definitely new school but it has a classic touch putting in the class of Michigan and Notre Dame. As long as nobody makes a case for those God-awful jerseys the Canes come up with every year I'll be fine. Seriously, do they just take a few swatches of orange and green cloth and let a chimp put it together. We might not win the game every year, but we for damn sure look good.
As much as I love my Dawgs in red and black with silver britches, Notre Dame in the kelley green jerseys and golf pants is the most powerful uniform in college football. Any true fan should get goosebumps when the most legendary team in the land emerges wearing the most superstitiously sacred of all jerseys for a big game.
I like the classic Penn State and Texas ones a lot. Not to flashy but I think they are classy uniforms. Miami and Cal I would say are the best of the more recent jersey changes. However my favorite uniform of all-time is the Florida Gators back in the day when Fred Taylor was there. Those were boss. They had the shorter jerseys that weren't tucked in and the mirror visors. They were a problem. Who is this Simpson kid that always vents. Syracuse? Miami throwbacks? they are both garbage.
Simple, but inspired, the Crimson helmet with one white stripe and the white numbers on the side sums up 'Bama's statement this year "we're still 'Bama, and we're still the best"
The Spartans of MSU have the best uniforms. Classic Green with the Spartan on the helmet. Show me the Money and its all GREEN. You folks at SI have to many U of M grads on your staff. Michigan doesn't come close to the Spartans, ND, UCLA, USC, Miami or Colorado.
Oregon. Everyone talks about it, and that is the point of having them! Publicity is the name of the game. Who can out Pub everyone else. Every list, mostly the bad jersey list, always lists the Oregon Hgihlighters! Being an alum, I hated um, but we get talked about and that is what really matters.
Nobody has a better uniform than Florida State. Especially when they wear the garnet jersey with the garnet pants. Also you can never go wrong with the Carolina blue uniform of the Tar Heels. I don't know how anyone can say Penn State's is good. I would say it is so plain except for the fact that god forbid they put names on them but they had no problem putting the Nike swoosh on them.
In no particular order, these are the best uniforms in college football: Michigan, Florida State, UCLA, UVa, ND, Florida, Michigan State, Iowa and Texas. All classic, with the exception of UVa, and oddly enough, I never went to any of those schools, so I have no particular bias.
If you are looking for the best NCAA football jersey look no further then the Smurf Turf! Boise State has the greatest jerseys. The blue with the orange flowing over top of a blue turf is the greatest sight. And you can't beat the evil bronco staring you down on their helmets.
How can everyone forget the Big Red of Nebraska? Classic, stylish, with just a hint of flash. The red N on the helmet screams dominance. Combine 75,000 red-clad loons in Memorial Stadium and it is a beautiful sight.
I didn't believe there was a question for today. I thought it was understood that Michigan had the only uniform worth wearing.
Being an Ohio native, the best uniforms in college football, hands down... MICHIGAN!!! the maize and blue look great together and team, college or pro can touch the winged helmet. Worst uni's Va. Tech, Maryland, and Miami. Nike needs to stop with this new wave look and stick to tradition because that is what college is about.
As another Michigan fan who disagrees with your pick, I'd have to go with Nebraska. Even more than Alabama's helmet numbers, or Michigan's wings, that simple red N with the no-frills uni screams "college" to me.
I think when the Maryland Terps wear their black jersey's with the white and red helmets, they take the cake with cool uniforms. People talk about teams with tradition, but don't most schools in major conferences have "tradition" in the sense they have played football since the late 1800's? These people who say ugly uniforms like Pa State and Michigan are great because of their tradition...I say their tradition is no better than anybody elses. Maryland uniforms look great!
The most wins in college football history. The best winning percentage in college football history. The most consecutive bowl trips in college football history. The greatest fight song in college football history. The most times ranked in college football history. The biggest stadium in college football history. THE BEST UNIFORMS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY. Hail to the Victors. Go Blue!
Oklahoma and Texas have the best jerseys in the NCAA. But they could do something different for pants. Iowa state and Iowa have the best helmets. Iowa States candy red looks awesome. Iowa's black helmets look vintage just like the steelers black.
To correct an earlier poster (probably a jealous MSU fan living with a severe inferiority complex), the Spalding company developed the "winged" helmet. Fritz Crisler adopted the design at Princeton and, when he came to Michigan, took the design with him there. No "stealing" going on at all. Michigan gets my vote for best uniforms, much to the chagrin of poorly outfitte MSU and OSU fans.
How can anyone go against the black and gold of Iowa? Black is an intimidating color and the gold is a bit of flashiness. The ugliest unis have to be those Oregon yellows. Even though I hate Michigan, their helmets are pretty flashy. As for Ohio State and Penn State, they really need to spend more money on uniforms. I can't believe that 'The' University of Ohio State can't have better uniforms.
University of Dayton Flyers. The red jersey sends a message to the opponent about how prominent a football program they have. They're intimidating, certainly not in their size, but how the clutter of red plays together and is well-coached.
UCLA's powder blue is college football's best uniform, hands down! The fact that no other team in the nation wears powder blue makes the Bruins' jersey very original. UCLA's powder blue jersey would beat any other jersey in sales revenue. I'm sure the UCLA Store is very happy now that the Bruins are contending for the national title.
While there are alot of nice uni's out there, from the classics like Bama, Neb, PSU, OSU...and even the sweet Purple pants of N'Western....the best Uni has to be Michigan's. The no frill Maize and Blue, the Winged Helmets...it all screams Tradition, Honor, and the greatest football program in the land.
Why even ask? Nothing says football dominance like the Blue and White of B-Y-U! Add the classic "stretched" Y on the side of the helmets, and you've got yourself a classic look. For second place, look no further than Lincoln, Nebraska and the Cornhuskers-their look is simple, yet stylish.
For pure college football tradition there is no doubt that Ohio State has the best uniform. It's not mind numbingly dull(like..um..perhaps Penn State, Alabama, or Nenraska, nor is it too space age gawdy (Oregon being the poster child in that department.) The scarlett and grey reeks of tradition and excellence and the buckeye leaves on the helmets are so freakin cool! The second worst uniform(let's face it,Oregon is,hands down, the worst), has to be the team whose uniform is the official jersey of the infamous gang, the Crips. That's right, Michigan.
Not many people would think this, but another great traditional college uniform is the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Maroon and gold, no flash, just very straight forward. Outside of one year in the early 90s, the Gophers have had the same uniform for over 100 years. Simple "M" on the helmet, gold pants and maroon jerseys. No helmet awards and no flash. I think it may be the shade of yellow that throws people off, but the Gophers have some very classic uniforms.
