AFTER 2 A.M.: Slices, right off Mill Avenue, serves up the best pizza in the Valley whether it's 2 p.m. or 2 a.m. For $2 you get a giant steaming slice of cheese that will make you feel like you're on the streets of New York. MUST-EAT: The Chuckbox across the street from campus. For more than 25 years "Big Juan," the professor of broilogy, has been serving up the famous "Big One," a 1/3-pound hamburger that is consistently voted the best in the Valley. DOSE OF CULTURE: Take a tour of the Gammage Auditorium, one of the last designs by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Created during the last two years of his life, the Gammage Auditorium opened in 1964 and today hosts touring Broadway shows, musicals and stage performances. RULE #86: If you are going sit in the student section at Sun Devil Stadium, be prepared to wear a lot of gold and a lot sunscreen (unless you plan on lookng ASU maroon by the end of the day). MUSIC MUST-STOP: The Marquee Theater nearby campus is an intimate venue that has a 45-foot stage and stadium seating and features a wide variety of performers from up-and-comers to established groups such as George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. GETTING AROUND: The FLASH (Free Local Area Shuttle) circles around the campus and downtown Tempe every 10 minutes and is a great way to get around the city if you don't want to walk. TICKETMASTER: Tickets for nearly any Sun Devils game -- expect for games against the hated Wildcats --be purchased at the gate before the game. ONLY AT ARIZONA STATE: Sun Devil Stadium is the only college facility that also doubles as a venue for a professional sports team. Although some might dispute the merits of the Arizona Cardinals being referred to as an NFL team, they have called Sun Devil Stadium home since moving to the city in 1988. The stadium has also hosted a Super Bowl and is the home of the Fiesta Bowl. PREGAME: McDuffy's Bar and Grill in Tempe is consistently recognized as one of the best sports bars in the country (ranked No. 5 by Sports Illustrated) and is the place to be before and after games to take in all the games and enjoy specials like $1 beers and 10 cent wings. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Nov. 25, Arizona at ASU. It always falls on the day after Thanksgiving and is always an occasion for fans to party hard afterward, since the outcome rarely changes the fortunes of either team. PACK YOUR: Tortillas. It's a tradition that started during ASU's Rose Bowl run nearly a decade ago and continues to this day. After the Sun Devils score a touchdown, students start flinging tortillas onto the field like Frisbees at a park. RITE OF PASSAGE: Ringing the Victory Bell outside of Sun Devil Stadium before and after the Sun Devils play is a must. Also, painting the large golden "A" that sits atop A Mountain is something every student must try to do before graduation. | |||||||
