Just because they're cheap doesn't mean they aren't the best dogs you'll find in the Bay Area. Locals swear by this tiny establishment on Durant Avenue, where surly employees and specialty dogs like the Chicken Apple and the Vegetarian keep students coming back for more. MUST-EAT: Cheese N' Stuff. The tastiest and most affordable sandwiches are available at this student hangout, where Cal fans can enjoy a deluxe hand-carved sandwich for $3.25 while admiring the signs on the wall, which include the ever-popular "No Stanfurd fans." Sam, the owner and a Cal diehard, was once admonished for giving players free hoagies. DOSE OF CULTURE: Berkeley Art Museum. There are 11 galleries inside this fan-shaped facility, but the most popular exhibit might be the Pacific Film Archive, where more than 800 films you won't find at your local AMC are shown inside an intimate theater throughout the year. RULE #86: Once again, don't wear red. Some Cal fans have been known to physically remove red articles of clothing from visitors who violate this rule. MUSIC MUST-STOP: Hearst Greek Theatre. With 8,500 seats on concrete risers and an expansive column-backed stage there's nothing quite like catching a concert in this open-air amphitheater that makes you feel as if you're back in ancient Greece. In addition to hosting the likes of the White Stripes and Elvis Costello, the theater is also the site of the Big Game bonfire rally. GETTING AROUND: The only thing worse than driving in Berkeley is finding parking, which is next to impossible. Your best bet to get around is simply to walk, unless you want to leave Berkeley and go to San Francisco, in which case you can simply take the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). TICKETMASTER: Tickets for all Cal athletic events can be purchased online at calbears.com or at the on-campus ticket office. ONLY AT CAL: Tightwad Hill. No tickets to the Big Game? No worries. Head up to this legendary slope that overlooks the eastern side of Memorial Stadium where cheapskates can catch every home game free of charge. PREGAME: The best place to be is at any one of the dozens of barbeques taking place at the nearby frat houses. Before the Big Game go to the Delta Upsilon house and enjoy a nice steak as redheads get their hair shaved off on the front porch. Alpha Tao Omega packs 100 people onto its rooftop balcony that overlooks Memorial Stadium, maximizing the amount of beer you can drink while still not missing kickoff. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Nov. 12. USC invades Memorial Stadium for the first time since its last lost there, over two years and 30 straight wins ago, as Cal once again hopes to play the role of spoiler. PACK YOUR: Booya T-shirt. Not as trendy as last year's tie-dyed Ted Head shirts, but Futura on Telegraph has been selling these shirts like hot cakes, which are not in reference to ESPN's Stuart Scott, but to Cal quarterback Joe Ayoob's last name spelled backward. RITE OF PASSAGE: Getting Rolled Up. You haven't quite lived until you've had your buddies lift you up as the crowd takes you up and around the stadium. Just make sure you give someone your wallet, keys and sandals before going crowd-surfing. | |||
