9. Washington StateWalk, root for the Cougs and win the Apple CupPosted: Friday November 11, 2005 11:59AM; Updated: Friday November 11, 2005 11:59AM AFTER 2 A.M.: When the bars let out, make your way to the Hot Dog cart at Munchiez, where there are hot girls serving up hot dogs and good conversation. MUST-EAT: Sellas Calzones. Feel free to bust out the crayons when eating at Sellas. Not only do they serve the best calzones around, but the walls are covered in crayon drawings done over the years by patrons. DOSE OF CULTURE: Hells Canyon. Not far from campus you can check out the Lewis-Clark Valley, the Gateway to Hells Canyon, which is North America's deepest river gorge. The flowing waters of the 1,000-mile-long Snake River formed the canyon. RULE #86. If you want to stay safe, don't wear purple. MUSIC MUST-STOP: Get a chance to see E-Drid rap his Go Cougs song, it goes to the beat of Lean Back and took the campus by storm last fall. It's a regular at Pullman parties and on local airwaves. GETTING AROUND: Walk. You can get anywhere in Pullman by foot in less than 45 minutes, though it seems longer when it's snowing at 2 a.m. and it's your only option to get home. You can get anywhere on campus in less than 20 minutes. TICKETMASTER: When you first get on campus you are greeted by the Cougars Depot -- the ticket office for Washington State Athletics. ONLY AT WASHINGTON STATE: After each Cougars touchdown, a cannon operated by the ROTC fires a blank off the Compton Union Building and the cheerleaders do a push-up for each point scored. PREGAME: Before every home football game, Wazzu opens up its massive Hollingbery Fieldhouse to tailgaters. Approximately 10 TVs are brought in for fans, and they can choose from plenty of local food vendors and beer selections. The Fieldhouse stays open throughout the game but empties out just before kickoff. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: On Feb. 4, Washington State will color the court Crimson for its basketball game against Washington. With Dick Bennett perhaps in his final season as a head basketball coach, the Cougars play against their hated rival. Both programs have been on the rise in the past couple years, and the game will be packed. PACK YOUR: Jacket. Be prepared to brave the elements during the fall and winter months, especially if you plan on walking around campus. RITE OF PASSAGE: The Palouse Walk. The tradition started when the sports editor of the Argonaut, the Idaho student newspaper, challenged the Evergreen's editor and said that the loser of the annual game between the two schools would have to walk the eight miles to the winner's campus. Wazzu fans haven't had to make the pilgrimage often in recent years. | |||
