Maryland (5-4, 3-3 ACC) needs to win one of its final two games to become bowl eligible. Yet even with a sixth qualifying win, there is no promise of playing in the postseason. Seven ACC teams have already qualified for the conference's six guaranteed bowl slots, and as many as three more could join them by the end of the season. Officially, at least, Georgia Tech's Jan. 1, 1999, Gator Bowl victory over Notre Dame never happened, nor did the Jan. 1, 2000 Gator Bowl loss to Miami, or the 2000 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl loss to LSU, or the 2001 Seattle Bowl victory over Stanford, or the 2002 Silicon Valley Classic loss to Fresno State. Those games all have been "vacated," the NCAA infractions committee announced Thursday, because the school played academically ineligible players. No one ever really doubted Will Blackmon's ability to make the switch from cornerback to wide receiver his senior year at Boston College. Blackmon's biggest challenge didn't involve grasping a football. It was grasping BC's complicated pro-style offense in such a short period of time. Wisconsin reserve quarterback Bryan Savage, a talented redshirt freshman from Clifton Heights, Pa., who has yet to play this season, has asked the UW coaches to be released from his scholarship, according to sources. Savage plans to leave UW at the semester break and enroll in a Division I school in January. Sophomore Bobby Washington, the odd man out among four Parade All-America tailbacks for N.C. State, is considering transferring after the season. Washington's mother, Leslie Washington, said her son is unhappy with his lack of playing time, and will decide by the second week of December whether to transfer. Coach Roy Williams said North Carolina likely will start three freshmen in its opener for just the second time since freshmen became eligible in 1972-73 when it plays host to Gardner-Webb on Saturday. | |||
