Ohio State senior A.J. Hawk had been warned repeatedly by his family not to keep cash in a safe in his bedroom. But his failure to heed their advice cost the All-American linebacker about $3,000. Hawk lost the money when an off-campus house he is renting with teammate Nick Mangold and another roommate was burglarized during Thanksgiving break.

In August, South Carolina reported that receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. sent recruiting correspondence to California quarterback prospect Jimmy Clausen before the permissible date to do so. The school previously had disclosed the violation, in which Spurrier Jr. mailed a note to Clausen before Sept. 1, the earliest date that coaches can send correspondence to juniors. USC athletics director Eric Hyman issued a letter of caution to Spurrier Jr., who was prohibited from recruiting Clausen for a six-week period ending Oct. 12.

Ward, the No. 3-rated player at his position by scout.com, could be a pivotal get for Georgia because of the possible departure of tight end Leonard Pope. Pope, a junior, has been noncommittal as to whether he will stay or test the NFL Draft.

Tennessee has reached an agreement with Oregon to play two football games over the next decade. The teams will play in Knoxville in 2010 and in Eugene in 2013, UT Athletics Director Mike Hamilton said yesterday.

Kevin Durant, a highly coveted basketball player from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, will announce his commitment to the University of Texas today, according to people familiar with his recruitment. Durant would represent coach Rick Barnes' highest-rated out-of-state recruit since he came to Texas in 1998. A 6-foot, 10-inch forward, Durant is ranked No. 2 in the high school senior class of 2006 by Scout.com.

Carl Landry's decision to opt for a medical redshirt left Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter with mixed emotions. Painter agrees adding Landry -- an All-Big Ten second-team forward last season -- to an already experienced 2006-07 team is a positive. For next season. But the first-year Purdue coach knows it will make it tough this season, especially for fans who have seen the Boilermakers go from one of the Big Ten's best teams to one of its worst over the past five years.
