Royals hold top stop by winning prestigious tourney

Christ the King (Queens, N.Y.) (7-0)
The Royals left no doubt that they are No. 1 by winning the nation's most prestigious tournament, the Nike Tournament of Champions, for the second straight year. Ten of last week's top 20 teams went head-to-head in the tourney. The title game was one for the ages as the Royals outlasted No. 2 Collins Hills in overtime before a capacity crowd of 2,844. Christ the King's winning streak now stands at 34 games. Tina Charles, a 6-foot-4 UConn recruit, earned tournament MVP honors with 29 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks in the title game. "Tina was out to prove she is the best player in the country and she did," coach Bob Mackey said. Charles had 25 points and 13 rebounds in a semifinal victory over No. 3 Troy and exploded for 40 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks in a win over then-No. 12 Ursuline Academy.

Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) (9-1)
The Eagles were clipped by No. 1 Christ the King in the title game of the Nike Tournament of Champions. The loss ended a 27-game winning streak. Sensational junior Maya Moore (6-1) poured in 40 points before fouling out with two minutes remaining in overtime. Her fifth foul was a technical for punching a loose ball down court with a closed fist. Jordan Jones added 19 points. Christ the King coach Bob Mackey said Moore "has got to be the best player in the country behind Tina Charles. The (fifth foul) call was unfortunate." Moore scored 23 points in a close semifinal win over then-No. 3 Southridge. In the quarterfinals, she had 34 points in a victory over then-No. 12 Good Counsel. Moore had 26 and Jones added 17 in an opening-round win over Forest Park.

Troy (Fullerton, Calif.) (7-1)
The Warriors shot 21-of-39 from the field in a rout of then-No. 3 Southridge to place third in the Nike Tournament of Champions. Lauren Sims, coming off an injury, scored 13 points in 10 minutes and Rheya Neabors added 12 points. The Warriors' 35-game winning streak was broken during a close semifinal loss to No. 1 Christ the King. The Warriors, who led, 19-9, at the end of the first quarter, shot 16 of 40 from the field, missed seven layups and were outscored, 12-2, from the free-throw line. Neabors scored 16 points in a quarterfinal win over Oregon City. Sophomore Amanda Sims scored 25 points in an opening win over then-No. 16 Bishop McNamara.

Murry Bergtraum (New York, New York) (7-0)
Games against Manhattan Center and Walton were postponed due to the transit strike. Senior Epiphanny Prince (5-9) is averaging 37 points and 11 assists. Junior Erica Morrow is averaging 17 points and eight assists.

Poly (Long Beach) (6-0)
The underclass-dominated Jackrabbits recorded one of the biggest victories of the season so far by stunning highly-regarded Harbor City Narbonne. Candice Nichols, a 5-10 junior, is averaging 15.7 points, though she missed two games with flu. Six-foot sophomore Jasmine Dixon is averaging 12.5 points. Junior Jameia McDuffy is averaging 6.3 steals.

Murry Bergtraum (New York, N.Y.) (7-0)
Rutgers signee Epiphanny Prince (5-9) scored a school-record 45 points in a rout of Frederick Douglass Academy and is on target to surpass 2,000 for her career. She is averaging 39 points, 11 assists and five steals. Erica Morrow, a 5-9 junior, is averaging 19 points, six assists and three steals.

Cardinal O'Hara (Springfield, Pa.) (2-0)
Heather Scanlon, a 6-3 senior, had 14 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over Nazareth Academy. Six-foot senior Amy Gillespie added 12 points.

Lexington Catholic (Ky.) (5-0)
Lexington Catholic extended its winning streak to 23 games with a victory over South Laurel. Six-foot senior Anaris Sickles had 13 points and six rebounds.

Dunbar (Fort Worth) (15-1)
The Lady Wildcats crushed two opponents to push their winning streak to 12 games following a 46-39 upset loss to Lubbock Trinity Christian. Jerin Smith averaged 23 points in the two victories. Brooklyn Pope, a 6-2 sophomore, had a triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks) in a rout of Poly Tech, and 14 points and 16 rebounds in a win over South Hills.

Fenwick (Oak Park, Ill.) (12-0)
The Friars rolled past three opponents as 6-2 junior Devereaux Peters averaged 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. Alison Jackson, a 6-0 junior, averaged 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds. A third junior, 5-11 Erin Power, who is the daughter of head coach Dave Power, dished out 10 assists in a win over St. Ignatius and seven in a victory over Benet Academy.
