Factoid

I'm just guessing here, but I'm going to assume the Jaguars are the first team in NFL history with two coordinators named Smith. Mike Smith is entering his third season as Jacksonville's defensive coordinator. Carl Smith, who served as the quarterbacks coach last year at USC, where he had Heisman winner Matt Leinart, is the Jags' new offensive coordinator. No wonder this team took a kid named Jones in the draft's first round.

Fantasy Geek Note

I'm no football personnel expert -- I just play one on the Internet -- but I'm here to tell you that receiver Reggie Williams is going to make some fantasy team owners very happy this year. Jacksonville's 2004 first-round pick had a low-impact rookie season, like so many other highly drafted pass catchers have in the past. But Williams looks poised for a breakthrough year and head coach Jack Del Rio is positively giddy about the prospects.

"Reggie's going to have a big year, there's no doubt in my mind,'' Del Rio said. "He's a man. This is a big, strong athlete. The light has come on and he's driven right now. I think last year he just needed to mature and his body needed to mature. But you can expect really good things from him.''

Camp Confidential

I got the vaguest answers when I asked folks at the Jaguars to describe what the team's offensive identity will be in the new offense being installed by first-year offensive coordinator Carl Smith. To wit:

From Smith: "We're going to do the score-more-points-than-they-do offense, that's what we're going to be running. That's our plan.''

From Leftwich: "You can't describe Carl's system. It's a little bit of everything. He came in and we made plays to fit our type of players. It's about doing what our players are best at doing. He's going to make sure we're allowed to do our things.''

From Del Rio: "I don't know how to characterize it. How does Charlie Weis characterize his offense? Ever hear him describe it as a West Coast offense or try to give it a nickname? I think what you do is you attack the people you're playing against with the people you have and get the matchups you're hoping to create.

"One game it might be going with five wides, and one game it might be coming in and pounding them with two tight ends and two backs. We're trying to build the flexibility to utilize the people we have and to attack people where we think we can. Carl believes in us dictating the tempo and the style we're going to play."

My take? The Jags are going to feature more of a vertical passing game than in the past, which is the strength of Leftwich's game. He has struggled at times with the short, touch pass, so the West Coast influence will be dropped. But the Jags will still try to run the ball plenty with Taylor and Co., because Del Rio believes the ground game is fundamental to success.
