Young, Bush neck-and-neck after Reggie's huge night

After Reggie Bush's 513-yard performance Saturday night, many have anointed the USC running back as the 2005 Heisman winner. The Watchman is not one of them. At least not yet. In my opinion, the race for the stiff-armed statue is a virtual dead heat, and while there is no doubt that Bush amazed like few others have, Vince Young has been just as impressive -- and has performed more consistently for the entire season. In a battle that's so close, the winner may just be the one who has the ball last.

1. Vince Young, QB, Texas, Jr.

Last week: Idle
Season: 155-of-244 passing, 2,414 yards, 22 touchdowns, 8 interceptions; 117 rushes, 774 yards, 8 touchdowns

The lowdown: With Bush upping the ante, Young will need to look impressive against an Aggies team that is 96th in scoring defense, 109th in total defense and 117th in pass defense.

2. Reggie Bush, RB, USC, Jr.

Last week: 23 rushes, 294 yards, 2 touchdowns; 3 receptions, 68 yards; 1 punt return, 16 yards; 7 kickoff returns, 135 yards in a 50-42 victory against No. 16 Fresno State
Season: 163 rushes, 1,398 yards, 13 touchdowns; 31 receptions, 383 yards, 2 touchdowns; 17 punt returns, 178 yards, 1 touchdown; 22 kickoff returns; 379 yards

The lowdown: "He was pure magic," USC coach Pete Carroll said of Bush after he went for a Pac-10 record 513 all-purpose yards. After four average weeks, this was the kind of signature, Heisman-type performance that Bush needed.

3. Matt Leinart, QB, USC, Sr.

Last week: 22-of-33 passing, 200 yards, 1 touchdown in a 50-42 victory against No. 16 Fresno State
Season: 233-of-351 passing, 3,217 yards, 24 touchdowns, 7 interceptions; 39 rushes, 31 yards, 6 touchdowns

The lowdown: One would have a very difficult time making an argument for Leinart, considering he has not even been the best player in his own backfield. He has rolled up great numbers against teams like Arkansas and Washington State, but he has been outplayed by Bush when the Trojans have been tested by Arizona State, Notre Dame and Fresno State.

4. Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame, Jr.

Last week: 21-of-37 passing, 270 yards, 2 touchdowns in a 34-10 victory against Syracuse
Season: 238-of-367 passing, 3,201 yards, 29 touchdowns, 5 interceptions

The lowdown: Quinn admittedly did not play well against the Orange. "I would probably have to stretch back to maybe the Michigan game to feel as bad as I do now," he said after beating 'Cuse. Nonetheless, Quinn likely has locked up a trip to New York for Dec. 10. The question is, how close will he come to passing Leinart for third?
