Young's subpar effort sends Bush into top spot

What was a virtual dead heat a week ago (at least in this opinion) has become Reggie Bush's Heisman to lose. Some of you will say that the Watchman was late in coming around. The Watchman however thinks that others were too quick to discount Vince Young's entire body of work. Still, Young's head-scratching performance against what had been a porous A&M defense drops him down to No. 2. What does Young need on Saturday to win this vote? Frankly, a Reggie Bush-type effort.

Note: The candidates were cut from eight to five this week.

1. Reggie Bush, RB, USC, Jr.

Last week: Idle
Season: 163 rushes, 1,398 yards, 13 touchdowns; 31 receptions, 383 yards, 2 touchdowns; 17 punt returns, 178 yards, 1 touchdown; 22 kickoff returns; 379 yards

The lowdown: Bush gets the perfect setup as he tries to close out his campaign for the stiff-armed statue: a UCLA rush defense ranked 115th in the country. Note to Heisman engravers: There's no C in B-U-S-H.

2. Vince Young, QB, Texas, Jr.

Last week: 13-of-24 passing, 162 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception; 11 rushes, 19 yards in a 40-29 victory at Texas A&M
Season: 168-of-268 passing, 2,576 yards, 23 touchdowns, 9 interceptions; 128 rushes, 793 yards, 8 touchdowns

The lowdown: Considering that the A&M game was on national television and came six days after Bush's blowup against Fresno State, the timing could not have been worse for Young to have his worst game of the season. Nonetheless Young is still alive, albeit barely, on the Watchman's ballot.
