Sometimes you don't know what's going to strike a nerve. I guess my Monday night football comments did. What I basically said was I think this is the biggest non-story of the year, that no one out there cares whether the games are on ABC, NBC, ESPN, whatever. It was a big story 22 years ago, when Howard Cosell left the telecasts. Now it's just a football game leaving one home for another.
Of my mail on Monday, about 65 percent of the people agreed with me. Of those who didn't, several did not have ESPN in their homes, either because they don't have cable TV or because they don't have ESPN on their basic cable package. I obviously did not take those people into account when I said no one cares. But I will now say very few people care. Some of your thoughts:
IT'S ALL ALPHABET SOUP TO JOSH. From Josh DuVall, of Charlotte: "Thank you for not writing about the Monday night game moving off ABC. What a non-story.''
IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY TO JEFF. From Jeff Miller, of Nashville: "MNF is moving from ABC to ESPN, which is a subsidiary network with the Disney parent. It's not like it's moving to the Outdoor Life Network. Nobody cares whether the games are on ABC or ESPN.''
CORY CARES, HOWEVER. From Cory of Olympia, Wash.: "Not all of us have ESPN. I think it's terrible that the Monday night games are moving to ESPN. Am I the only person in the world who doesn't get ESPN?''
I'd say you're in a dwindling minority, Cory. Keep in mind, though, that the better night package next year will be on NBC on Sunday nights.
TIKI AND RONDE HAVE A BUDDY IN NOVA SCOTIA. From Brian Lazzuri of Antigonish, Nova Scotia: "As a former high school classmate of Tiki and Ronde Barber, I'm biased, but given your recent musings that Jerome Bettis is a prime candidate for the Hall of Fame, is there a chance for Tiki or Ronde to make the Hall?''
Sure. I'd say it's a long shot, but they both should have two or three good years left. They just turned 30. When you look at the positions, I'd say Ronde has the best shot. He's got the quirky but meaningful 20 sacks and 20 interceptions going for him, he's made the Pro Bowl more often, he was a key part of a Super Bowl winner. Now, Ronde's probably never had a year like Tiki's having right now, but he's had more very good years than Tiki has.
THURSDAY NIGHT? NO WAY. From Jeff Lashock of Green Bay: "The Thursday night TV package that's being discussed for next year disgusts me. The NFL was, and is, meant for Sunday afternoons. The Packers had two Sunday noon games this year, until this week's game with Seattle was changed to a noon start. The other games were night games or late-afternoon games that turn into night games. NFL, please keep the sanctity of football on Sunday afternoons.''
