No NFL team had gone longer without a 100-yard rusher on opening day than the Buccaneers. Only two had gone longer than the Steelers.

So where did the two biggest opening-weekend rushing performances come from? You guessed it. The Steelers and Buccaneers.

And they came from two unlikely sources -- a second-year undrafted free agent who spent half his rookie season inactive and a rookie playing in his first NFL game.

Steelers back Willie Parker, who wasn't even active until the eighth week of last season, ran for a league-high 161 yards against the Titans, and Carnell Williams, a rookie first-round pick from Auburn, shredded the Vikings for 148 yards.

Parker is the first Steelers back to surpass 100 yards on opening day since Barry Foster had 107 against the same franchise -- the Houston Oilers -- in 1992. Williams is the Bucs' first opening-day back to surpass 100 yard since James Wilder ran for 166 yards against the Bears in 1985.

Williams' 148 rushing yards are the fifth-most in NFL history by a back playing in his first NFL game and the most in 25 years. Here are the top five running back debuts in NFL history:

Top Five Running Back Debuts
Running Back Team Opponent Date Yards
Alan Ameche Colts Bears Sept. 25, 1955 194
Ottis Anderson Cardinals Cowboys Sept. 2, 1979 193
William Andrews Falcons Saints Sept. 2, 1979 167
Billy Sims Lions Rams Sept. 7, 1980 153
Carnell Williams Buccaneers Vikings Sept. 11, 2005 148

Note that the Anderson and Andrews' performances were on the same day. And Ameche, Anderson and Andrews never eclipsed their opening day efforts the rest of their career.

Williams is the first Buccaneers running back to surpass 100 yards since Mike Alstott had 131 yards against the Broncos the third week of the 1999 season.

The longest streak without a 100-yard back now belongs to the Arizona Cardinals, whose last opening-day 100-yard back was Stump Mitchell, who ran for 110 yards against the Bengals in 1988.

All seven teams that had a 100-yard back this weekend -- the Steelers, Buccaneers, Bengals, Redskins, Bills, Chiefs and Falcons -- won. Teams that didn't have a 100-yard rusher went 9-16.

This isn't news. Over the last six years, teams with a 100-yard runner on opening day are 39-4 and that includes two games in which both teams had one. In games where only one team had a 100-yard back, that team is 37-2.

Redskins RB Clinton Portis recorded his third straight 100-yard opener, his second with the Redskins after one with the Broncos. The last back with three straight 100-yard openers was Edgerrin James of the Colts from 1999 through 2001.
