Ramirez passes Vlad in race for top AL vote-getter

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez has jumped into the lead in the latest American League All-Star voting released Tuesday.

Ramirez has received 1,936,373 votes for the 77th All-Star Game, to be played July 11 at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. A nine-time All-Star, Ramirez is batting .298 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI.

He surpassed Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who remains a close overall second with 1,932,366.

Ramirez is one of three Red Sox to lead their respective positions.

David Ortiz leads all first basemen with 1,666,940 votes while Jason Varitek tops catchers with 1,090,102. The Boston catcher moved over 42,000 votes ahead of 12-time All-Star Ivan Rodriguez of Detroit.

The rest of the infield leaders are New York Yankees. Robinson Cano leads second basemen with 1,045,221 while Alex Rodriguez leads third basemen with 1,751,939. Derek Jeter is the top shortstop vote-getter with 1,867,418.

The Seattle Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki is the other leading outfield vote-getter with 1,393,462. Suzuki was the majors' top vote-getter in 2001-2003.
