How stupid am I?Owners take me to task on my preaseason picksPosted: Friday September 29, 2006 3:21PM; Updated: Friday September 29, 2006 3:27PM
By Bob Harris, Special to SI.com, FootballDiehards Hey now! Week 4 draws near and we're all starting to get a better feel for which preseason projections are panning out and which aren't. I hear from many of you this time of year -- most with questions on that very topic. The vast majority of your inquiries are quite pertinent and to the point. You want to know why players I have touted are coming up short. Or why players I warned you against are surpassing all expectations. Most of all, it seems you want to know how stupid I am. So in an attempt to cut down on my volume of incoming mail -- and perhaps save some of you a moment or two along the way, I've created some composite questions of my own based on general comments, observations and queries finding their way to my inbox recently. I'll try to answer as honestly and accurately as possible. Especially when it comes to the real question: How stupid am I? Q: You told me not to draft Philadelphia running back Brian Westbrook. How stupid are you? A: C'mon now. ... It wasn't that simple. I didn't actually tell you to not to draft Westbrook; I told you to let somebody else draft Westbrook and suggested instead you select Atlanta's Warrick Dunn two rounds later instead. In case you missed it, my argument against Westbrook was lack of durability -- not inability to produce. So far, the former Villanova star has gone a long ways toward proving both points. Despite missing practices most of the past two weeks because of a knee injury, Westbrook has been in the starting lineup for the Eagles each of the last two Sundays. His totals in those two games: 185 yards rushing, 103 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Westbrook left practice on the Thursday before Philadelphia's Week 2 game against the Giants because of some swelling in his knee. He then missed two practices last week before playing against the 49ers, but head coach Andy Reid said Westbrook felt fine after the game. Westbrook has more time to heal this week because the Eagles have an extra day off before returning to work Thursday to prepare for Monday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. |
