The class of 2006 is loaded with running backs -- and unlike the top 10 quarterbacks, whom we profiled in December, many of these elite runners remain undecided. The cream of the crop is Ohio State-bound Chris Wells, who lived up to his billing as the nation's top recruit last Saturday at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

1. Chris Wells
6-1, 225-pounds, 4.5
Akron (Ohio) Garfield
Committed to Ohio State

Wells, the No. 1 prospect in Scout.com's Hot 100, has all the physical tools -- size, speed, power and quickness. It's rare to find a back who does what Wells can do, and he will only get bigger, stronger and faster after he gets to Columbus. Barring injury, he could have a huge impact for the Buckeyes as they make a run at the national championship in 2006. Wells rushed for more than 2,000 yards as a senior.

2. Stafon Johnson
6-0, 200, 4.45
Los Angeles Dorsey
Undecided

Johnson has emerged as the top prospect from the West Coast, and he's good enough to play on either side of the ball -- at running back or safety. He can be a tough inside runner and he also has good speed and vision. USC is the team to beat for Johnson, but now he says he wants to visit two SEC powers in the coming weeks -- Georgia and Florida.

3. C.J. Spiller
5-10, 185, 4.4
Lake Butler (Fla.) Union County
Undecided

If Wells is the most powerful of the elite backs, then Spiller is the most explosive. He has exceptional speed and quickness and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He rushed for more than 1,800 yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior. At the Scout.com combine in Jacksonville, he ran sub-4.4 three times in the 40 (he also hit the 4.4 mark as a sophomore). Spiller hits the hole hard, but is at his best when he gets around the edge. It will likely be an in-state battle between Florida State and Florida for his services, but USC has made quite an impression on him. Spiller grew up a Seminoles' fan and they are the team to beat, but the Gators and Trojans will make it tough.

4. LeSean McCoy
5-11, 200, 4.45
Harrisburg (Pa.) Bishop McDevitt
Undecided

McCoy, who broke his ankle and missed most of his senior season, still has the talent to rank No. 4 on this list, and Virginia Tech may be the front-runner for his signature. Alabama, Miami, N.C. State, USC and Penn State are also in the running. McCoy runs with speed, power, balance and vision. He sees the hole well and has excellent cutback ability.

5. Michael Goodson
5-11, 190, 4.45
Klein (Texas) Collins
Undecided

Goodson showed flashes of Reggie Bush-like talent at the U.S. Army All-American practices last week. He may not have Bush's straight-ahead speed, but he does have his elusiveness, vision and balance. Goodson can run inside and out and has the uncanny ability to stop on a dime and make people miss. He originally committed to Oklahoma State, but has since backed off, opening things up between the Cowboys, USC and Texas A&M.
