NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Butch Davis has agreed to become the next head coach at North Carolina, two sources told the Winston-Salem Journal on Wednesday afternoon. One source told the paper that a contract has already been signed. According to the Journal's sources, the school has yet to decide when to make an official announcement. North Carolina sports information director Steve Kirschner told the Journal that the university had nothing to report about its coaching search. Davis would replace John Bunting, whom the school fired on Oct. 22, effective after the season. With an 0-5 conference mark (1-8 overall), the Tar Heels are tied for last place in the ACC Coastal Division with Duke. Davis has not coached since 2004, when he was fired by the Cleveland Browns after amassing a 24-36 record. Prior to joining the Browns in 2000, Davis coached for six seasons at Miami, where he was 51-20. | |||||||
