SI.com's Gennaro Filice analyzes the matchup. Breaking down BYU
Led by four-year starting QB John Beck (who has thrown for 3,510 yards, 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions this season), BYU has had no problem airing it out and ranks fourth nationally in passing offense. Beck's No. 1 target is TE Jonny Harline, who leads the team with 754 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Senior Curtis Brown carries the bulk of the rushing load, but a pair of bruising sophomores (Fui Vakapuna and Masase Tonga) see some action, too. The Cougars take excellent care of the ball, having given away just 11 turnovers (No. 2 nationally). Second-year coach Bronco Mendenhall -- the 2006 Mountain West Coach of the Year -- has brought back BYU's potent offensive attack, but his biggest impact has come on the defensive side of the ball. Before the season, Mendenhall employed a 3-4-4 defense to take advantage of the Cougars' depth at linebacker, and BYU has responded by giving up just 15.25 points per game (16th nationally). The captain of the defense is senior linebacker Cameron Jensen (99 tackles, 8.5 for loss), a unanimous first-team all-MWC selection. Breaking down OregonWith former BYU head coach Gary Crowton as its offensive coordinator, Oregon boasts the nation's No. 8 total offense. But while Oregon is every bit as explosive as BYU, it has a much more balanced attack. The Ducks have plenty of playmakers -- QB Dennis Dixon, RB Jonathan Stewart and WR Jaison Williams -- but they have struggled to hold onto the ball, committing 30 turnovers. "We talk about possession of the football as more than nine-tenths of the law," Ducks head coach Mike Bellotti said. "In this case, it's the whole deal." Oregon's defense should present a formidable challenge for Beck & Co. The Ducks -- who hone their skills in the pass-happy Pac-10 -- rank 10th nationally in pass defense. Only one team (Oregon State) has eclipsed 250 yards passing against the Ducks, while BYU's Beck has accomplished that in every game this season. Lacking a standout star, the defense is headlined by free safety J.D. Nelson, who has 77 tackles. Final analysisStumbling BCS conference underachiever meets surging mid-major. Pretty standard when it comes to December bowls. While Oregon boasts a finer group of athletes, the Cougars hold the edge in experience. Win or lose, Oregon's season has already been defined. But an 11th win won't go unnoticed in Provo. The pick: BYU 41, Oregon 35
