Singh considering taking 2 weeks offPosted: Sunday March 5, 2006 8:49PM; Updated: Sunday March 5, 2006 8:49PM MIAMI (Ticker) - It doesn't qualify as big news when Tiger Woods has two weeks off. It's a different matter with Vijay Singh. Singh, who has had only one idle week all year, pulled out of this week's Honda Classic and may even withdraw from next week's Bay Hill Invitational, where he finished second last year after double-bogeying the final hole. Both events originally were on Singh's schedule, but the world's second-ranked player - who annually enters more tournaments than any other elite player - is unhappy with his game and believes it is time to get back to the drawing board and sort things out in time for next month's Masters. "I really need to take a week off, maybe two," Singh admitted Sunday after shooting a 67 to tie for 15th in the Ford Championship at Doral. "Bay Hill is a good tournament, but I need to fix a few things first, and if I'm not ready, I won't play. "I could see this week that my rhythm wasn't there in my swing and my timing's gone. I'm excited to go home and work on my game." What has caused Singh to lose his rhythm is subject to speculation. If he has lost his swing, it is ironic that putting - so long the bane of his existence - is now a strength. However, Singh admits he has run himself ragged this year, making a mistake by playing two tournaments in the Middle East in the second half of January instead of focusing on the PGA Tour. Originally, Singh had planned to play all four events of this month's Florida swing. That would have made it 11 tournaments in 12 weeks, too many even for the tour's proverbial ironm an. It is not as if Singh has been really struggling; he has not finished worse than 24th in eight starts this year. However, he has not seriously contended for victory since the season-opening Mercedes Championship, where he finished second. Singh plans to go the next two days without even touching a club, almost unheard of for him. "I need this break, need this rest," he said. "Two days off and I'll start thinking about it." © 2006 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP |
