Stadler seeks Ryder Cup for SeniorsPosted: Friday July 28, 2006 3:05PM; Updated: Friday July 28, 2006 3:05PM TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) -- Craig Stadler would like an equivalent of the Ryder Cup for seniors. A Ryder Cup player in 1983 and '85, Stadler said Friday that the improving strength of seniors golf in Europe would make for a competitive match. Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer are set to join the Senior Tour next year, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam the following year and Seve Ballesteros the year after that. The current group of European senior players include Sam Torrance and Mark James, both of them former Ryder Cup captains. "I would love to see a U.S.-European match, Ryder Cup-type series maybe or maybe just a one-week event," he said after his second round 66 at the Senior British Open left him one stroke off the lead. "I think the players would enjoy it. It's certainly not going to generate the press that the regular Ryder Cup does but I think it would be a fun thing to watch. There has been talk of that in the last few years, very little, but a little bit here and there." The Chrysler Cup was a series of matches between Americans and international stars in the 1980s and 90s. More recently there was also the UBS Warburg Cup team competition for players age 40 and over. Europe defends the Ryder Cup at Ireland's K Club Sept. 22-24. | |||
