Alonso hopes to keep rollingPosted: Thursday June 29, 2006 2:31PM; Updated: Thursday June 29, 2006 2:31PM INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Fernando Alonso is determined to "finish the job" when he starts the second half of his record-breaking Formula One season at Indianapolis this weekend. The Renault driver has made the best start to a season in F1 history, dropping just six points over the first nine races with six wins. Alonso has won the last four races to increase his lead to 25 points over Germany's Michael Schumacher in the standings. Despite that advantage, Alonso will not be on cruise control in the United States Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Spaniard knows his lead could be wiped out within three races. "The first half of the season went well and now I have to finish the job in the second half," Alonso said. "I cannot relax, I have to keep working because anything can happen. "This will be one of the most difficult races for us this weekend because of the characteristics of our car. I haven't finished in Indianapolis so I have to take the flag. My goal right now is to finish the race, hopefully on the podium." Alonso never got the chance to add Indianapolis to his list of conquered circuits in his championship-winning campaign last season due to the infamous Michelin pullout. Worries over the safety of Michelin tires forced Renault and six other teams to pull into the pits after the warmup lap. "After what happened last year, if we can win it would be the perfect present for Michelin," Alonso said. | |||
