Vince Young's decision leaves Texas in the lurch. No quarterback on scholarship has thrown a pass in college. The likely starter will be Colt McCoy, a freshman who redshirted in 2005. Jevan Snead, who is ranked among the top five high school quarterback prospects in the country, will enroll at Texas for the spring semester.

Following Miami's 40-3 loss to LSU, there was strong sentiment in the UM administration to change offensive coordinators. But AD Paul Dee insists coach Larry Coker wasn't required nor pressured to fire any assistants. According to a Board of Trustee member, two lower-profile trustees wanted to dump Coker, but that was never considered.

A possible candidate for the University of Miami defensive line coaching vacancy is Rick Petri, the current defensive line coach at Kentucky, according to a source with close ties to UM. Petri, now 52, coached the defensive line at Miami from 1993 through '95, mentoring All-American lineman Warren Sapp. He helped guide the '94 Hurricanes defense that led the nation in scoring defense and total defense.

Although Brian Calhoun still has not ruled out returning to Wisconsin for his senior season, he continues to lean heavily toward entering the 2006 NFL draft. "He is probably around 70%," Andrew Calhoun, Brian's father, said.

Kansas cornerback Charles Gordon confirmed a report in The Star regarding his plans to leave school early and enter the NFL draft. Gordon, who recently completed his junior season, issued a press release through the school's media-relations department thanking KU's fans and coaches for their support.

Ohio State junior cornerback Ashton Youboty has made himself eligible for the NFL draft, joining junior safety Donte Whitner, who hasn't made an official announcement but has the Buckeyes coaches assuming he won't return next season.

A month after he announced he was transferring to the University of Miami, former Miami Christian High shooting guard Jesus Verdejo said Sunday that he has instead transferred to the University of South Florida. Verdejo said he was transferring from Arizona to be closer to his family and for the chance to play again with UM guard Guillermo Diaz next season. But in a phone interview Sunday, Verdejo said the Bulls' fast-break style of play was a deciding factor.

Bob Hill won only 38 games in his disastrous four-year run at Fordham, but the new Seattle head coach has some advice for the Bronx school. "It's a good school, but they should really think about going to Division III and putting academics first if they're not going to put any money in sports. And that's OK if they do it, but they have to make that decision."
