With newspapers in California giving conflicting accounts of his discussions with the Oakland Raiders regarding their vacant coaching job, Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino moved late Wednesday to reassure fans that he is committed to the Cardinals.

Top Miami recruit Pat Devlin, a quarterback from Downington East High School in Exton, Pa., called Hurricanes coach Larry Coker last week to tell him he was keeping his options open for other schools. ''He's exploring Virginia and Penn State,'' Mike Matta, Devlin's high school coach, told The Miami Herald on Wednesday.

Malcolm Grant stood on the Garden floor Sunday afternoon during the Nike Super Six tournament for a three-point contest and he won't rule out the possibility he may be there again next season, playing for St. John's. The Red Storm coaching staff has started a full-court press to get Grant. When the Eagles played Niagara Falls H.S. Sunday, SJU coach Norm Roberts was in the stands at Baruch College.

After reviewing game tape, Georgia and SEC officials concluded that Bulldogs guard Mike Mercer didn't violate any rules by making a hand gesture toward Kentucky's Randolph Morris after dunking on him during Tuesday's loss. Television highlights shown after the game appeared to capture Mercer making some kind of derogatory hand gesture. Slow-motion reviews revealed Mercer extended his index finger with the back of his hand facing Morris.

Arizona senior Chris Rodgers, a part-time starter for the basketball team this season, has been dismissed from the squad, UA announced Wednesday night. It's not clear why Rodgers was dismissed, although Olson had been scheduled to meet with players earlier this week for evaluations.

Mike Nixon, a three-sport star at Sunnyslope High School who chose pro baseball over college football, is considering returning to football at Arizona State. Nixon is enrolled at ASU but is not yet part of the football program.

The three-year coaching hiatus of former UCLA football coach Bob Toledo ended Wednesday when he was introduced as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at New Mexico.
