Despite Marvell Wynne's less-than-stellar performance at last weekend's MLS player combine, the 19-year-old UCLA standout is expected to be chosen first in Friday's MLS SuperDraft. Chivas USA, which has the No. 1 pick, is said to be very high on the defender's speed and believes his athleticism will allow him to play right away. As is the custom the week of the MLS draft, coaches and GMs have been exchanging wild trade proposals and intently analyzing the talent pool. The MetroStars are planning several major moves, Chivas USA is attempting to rebuild after its inept debut season and most other clubs are positioning themselves to make significant upgrades before preseason workouts begin in two weeks. FC Dallas officials denied published reports out of New York of an impending trade that would send valuable young striker Eddie Johnson to the MetroStars for unhappy midfielder Amado Guevara, the league's 2004 MVP, who is publicly feuding with management. FC Dallas wades into today's MLS SuperDraft flush with picks, options and leverage for potential deal-making. Since the club is amply stocked with dependable starters, FC Dallas officials aren't pressing to fill immediate needs. That gives them the luxury of drafting for cover at certain positions or using plentiful leverage in swap talks before, and after, selecting at No. 6 overall. Freddy Adu wants to play in a World Cup for the United States. U.S. coach Bruce Arena won't announce which 18 players will suit up for Sunday's friendly against Canada until that morning, and the 5-foot-8 Adu appears on the bubble even for that. As for making the World Cup roster, the odds get longer. According to the Swede himself, Sven-Goran Eriksson is set to leave England after the World Cup. Eriksson has been at the center of controversy following last Sunday's newspaper scam. Young Southampton striker Theo Walcott has passed a medical and agreed personal terms with Arsenal, according to the BBC. The 16-year-old is now expected to be presented alongside manager Arsene Wenger at a press conference Friday afternoon. Arsenal striker Thierry Henry says his decision to stay at the club has nothing to do with money. The Frenchman announced two weeks ago that his intention was to remain with the Gunners after months of speculation over his future. Brazilian center-back Cláudio Caçapa, a firm first eleven player at Olympique Lyon, will be in dry dock for the next six to eight weeks. According to a medical bulletin released by the club, Caçapa picked up an injury to his left thigh muscle in training, and the damage requires rest and physiotherapy to avoid further problems. Jamie Carragher insisted last night that Liverpool wouldn't swap Steven Gerrard for any player on earth -- not even Ronaldinho. The Anfield center-half believes his England teammate is now the most complete player on the planet. Veteran Sunderland defender Alan Stubbs looks set to re-sign for Everton later on Friday. With Per Kroldrup expected to depart for Fiorentina, manager David Moyes is keen to reinforce his backline. Everton is ready to take a £1.6million loss on a player whose Goodison career consists of 147 minutes of action. Defender Per Kroldrup -- who was signed for £5.1m in the summer - flew to Italy last night to discuss terms over a proposed move to Fiorentina. The Italian side is prepared to pay £3.5m, which means Everton must swallow a massive loss on the player they signed barely six months ago. Leeds will try to sell Eirik Bakke for £1million before the transfer window closes after Aston Villa cut short the midfielder's loan spell. Villa chairman Doug Ellis has sent him back to Elland Road against manager David O'Leary's wishes as a cost-cutting move. The Honorary President of Real Madrid Alfredo di Stéfano has been discharged from hospital. He was admitted in Valencia almost a month ago and underwent a quadruple heart by-pass and the implantation of a pacemaker. Kakhaber Tskhadadze has been sacked by Georgian Premier League champions FC Dinamo Tbilisi following the club's disappointing first half of the season. German international defender Lukas Sinkiewicz has extended his contract with Bundesliga strugglers FC Köln. The 20-year-old, whose original deal was due to expire in summer 2007, has now signed up for another three and a half seasons. |
