Other teams, possibly including the Yankees, are watching to see what happens with Sammy Sosa and the Nationals. A Dominican Republic newspaper, reported that Alex Rodriguez visited Sosa in Miami last weekend. It's unclear whether Rodriguez was being social or doing legwork for Yankees GM Brian Cashman, who could use Sosa as part of a DH platoon with switch-hitter Bernie Williams. -- Chicago Tribune The Angels expect to receive an answer today from Jeff Weaver, who has been courted by several teams, including the Rangers and Indians. The Angels originally offered Weaver a one-year deal plus an option for 2007, but they are believed to have bumped their offer to two years. -- Los Angeles Times Roger Clemens said yesterday that among his mother's "final wishes" before she died last September were for the Rocket to retire. That revelation is the strongest indication yet that he will shut it down after next month's World Baseball Classic. -- New York Post Clemens says he wants to come to Arizona to pitch in the WBC, but will his 43-year-old legs let him? Clemens hinted during a conference telephone call shortly after the roster announcement that he might not be physically ready to pitch. -- Arizona Republic Kerry Wood is scheduled to throw again today as part of his long-toss regimen at Cubs camp. If Wood continues to progress, trainer Mark O'Neal said Tuesday, the Cubs probably will decide within the next week how soon he can get back on the mound and test his right shoulder, which was surgically repaired in September. -- Chicago Sun-Times Pedro Martinez is still missing his specially designed Nike cleats that are intended to permanently alleviate the pressure from the inflamed big toe on his right foot. Martínez expected the shoes to beat him here, but they did not, and he was forced to work out Tuesday wearing a right shoe that had been altered by the assistant trainer Mike Herbst. A Nike spokesman said Tuesday that Martinez would definitely receive his shoes Wednesday. -- New York Times With Randy Johnson's personal catcher gone to Boston as a free agent, Jorge Posada said yesterday he wants to sit down with the Big Unit and "talk it out." The marriage of high-strung pitcher and high-strung catcher didn't work last year, so John Flaherty caught Randy Johnson for much of 2005. -- New York Daily News |
