The Joey Harrington era could be about to end. Harrington has not closed the door on Detroit, but he has serious reservations about returning to the Lions and whether he stays or goes should be resolved by the weekend, a person with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday. The person declined to say if Harrington had asked to be traded or released and said the decision ultimately would be up to the Lions.

Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe would not mind if the Cowboys acquired Terrell Owens. "I am open to it," Bledsoe said. "It's obvious the guy is a great talent, and, if any coach can keep him in line, it would be Bill. It would have to be set up the right way, to make sure [the team] knows how to handle a situation like what happened in Philly."

Will the Broncos dare to become T.O.'s next employer? "I don't know what our position is with Terrell Owens," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said. "I'm sure there will be a lot more interest in him around the league now that he's a free agent. But as for us, I'm not sure." Bowlen wasn't being evasive so much as he was echoing what the rest of football feels about the inscrutable star.

New free agent Keyshawn Johnson said twice Wednesday afternoon he'd like to play for the Carolina Panthers. The bigger question might be if the Panthers are interested in Johnson. The team has a history of not pursuing players who have had trouble. Maybe it's wishful thinking on his part, but Johnson told the Fort Worth Star Telegram he had spoken with the Panthers. On Sirius NFL Radio an hour later, Johnson said he had not talked to any teams.

With his franchise quarterback safely tucked away, Dolphins coach Nick Saban has no plans to bring in Owens and Johnson.
  -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Saban said Wednesday he hopes to re-sign quarterback Gus Frerotte, but he cautioned that the situation would have to work out for both sides. Frerotte, who started 15 games last season and set a career high with 18 touchdown passes, was released Tuesday after Miami acquired Daunte Culpepper. Frerotte also is expected to receive interest from Denver and St. Louis.

While Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare expressed some frustration Wednesday with the team's latest request to restructure his contract, Miami ramped up its interest in free-agent tackle Tom Ashworth and cornerback Ty Law.
  -- Palm Beach Post

Owner Zygi Wilf said the Vikings did everything to keep Culpepper. Ultimately, Wilf said, the Vikings determined Culpepper did not want to play for them.
  -- Minneapolis Star Tribune

Free-agent quarterback Josh McCown had what was described as a productive interview with the Raiders on Wednesday, but left Alameda without a contract offer. The former Cardinals starter passed a physical at the Raiders' headquarters and expressed an interest in being the Raiders' starter, rather than a backup.
