Kevin Garnett has a big contract and is unhappy with his situation, but don't expect to see him shipped out of town the way the Vikings dispatched Daunte Culpepper. Garnett bemoaned the state of the Timberwolves on Sunday and all but publicly begged owner Glen Taylor to get him the help he needs to compete for an NBA title. But Garnett said Wednesday he is not trying to push a trade, and Taylor said he wouldn't do it anyway. -- St. Paul Pioneer Press

Bulls general manager John Paxson reached a boiling point Wednesday and fired back at one-time Bull Tim Thomas for saying he could have helped the Bulls win 20 more games this season and advance to the playoffs. On a morning radio show, Paxson responded by calling Thomas "delusional" and said the ninth-year forward reported to training camp out of shape in October. -- Chicago Tribune

Suns star Amaré Stoudemire returned to Phoenix on Wednesday and will have a magnetic resonance imaging exam performed on both knees Friday to look into any possible issues related to their stiffness and slight swelling in the right knee. -- Arizona Republic

The Celtics yesterday suspended Orien Greene indefinitely for his high-speed run through Waltham in the early hours of Monday morning. It is likely, however, that the rookie will be out just for last night's game against the Knicks. -- Boston Herald

Shaquille O'Neal missed Wednesday night's game against the Toronto Raptors with a hyperextended left knee and is day-to-day. The Heat's starting center missed the team's first trip to Canada on Nov. 20 because of an injured ankle. -- Miami Herald

Laker Coach Phil Jackson stoked the fire a bit by referring to San Antonio forward Bruce Bowen as "Edward Scissorhands." Bowen, one of the better and more active defenders in the league, will again cover Kobe Bryant. Bowen was fined $10,000 for kicking Seattle guard Ray Allen in the back during the Spurs' 106-102 loss Sunday. "Bowen's hands and feet are always moving," Jackson said. "Lot of things going on out there." -- Los Angeles Times

Quentin Richardson, who is sidelined with a sprained left thumb, will be re-evaluated tomorrow, and Larry Brown did not rule out the possibility that Richardson will miss the final 12 games. -- New York Daily News

Lakers center Chris Mihm could have missed the rest of the regular season because of a severely sprained right ankle but said he would return sooner, his progress moving along better than expected. He still feels some pain but is able to put an increased amount of weight on his ankle. He has missed eight games and has tried to stay in shape by swimming. -- Los Angeles Times

In an astounding change of direction and style that stunned the Rockets and the NBA, owner Leslie Alexander has chosen Boston Celtics statistical analyst Daryl Morey to be his next general manager. Morey will succeed Carroll Dawson after the 2006-07 season. Morey, the Celtics' senior vice president of operations and information, has worked under Boston owner Wyc Grousbeck for the past three seasons but has never been a player, coach, scout or general manager. -- Houston Chronicle

Francisco Elson, who is making the minimum $719,373, said his preference is to remain in Denver. At 30, he also knows this might be his best opportunity to land a big contract. -- Rocky Mountain News
