The Texans' decision to use the first pick in Saturday's draft on Reggie Bush or North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams probably will not be impacted by the controversy surrounding the family of the Heisman Trophy-winning running back. Owner Bob McNair said that the Texans are checking out the situation in Spring Valley, Calif., where Bush's family vacated the $757,000 house they'd been living in for a year because of questions involving the owner. One rumor yesterday: The Jets (No. 4) swap first-round picks with the Raiders (No. 7), who want a quarterback, and select Oregon NT Haloti NGata with the seventh pick. Such a move would raise questions about the future of DT Dewayne Roberston, who may not fit in a 3-4. Lately, Michael Robinson has been trying to convince people at football's ultimate level, the NFL, that he can play the position. Cautious scouts see the former Penn State quarterback instead as a wideout, or maybe a slotback, kick returner or safety. They think he's too short - in height and experience - to be a pro quarterback. Scouts and media experts have told Robinson that he'll be picked from the second to the fourth round in this weekend's draft. Barring a shocking development, Andy Reid's reluctance to draft a running back in the first round will continue Saturday when the Eagles make their first-round pick in the 2006 draft. The Eagles are one of 14 teams that have not drafted a running back in the first round in the last seven years. The Eagles are one of only seven teams that have not taken a running back as high as the second round. Bill Cowher issued a statement that has been heard since Chuck Noll first came aboard as Steelers coach, that the team was in position to take the best available players left on the board when it drafts at No. 32. He did say one position they won't draft in the first round is a quarterback, although the Steelers want to add one either later in the draft's seven rounds or as an undrafted free agent to compete for their No. 3 job behind Ben Roethlisberger. |
