Roger Clemens's decision on where he will pitch this season, or whether he will retire, should come soon, and pitching coach Al Nipper thinks the Red Sox have a chance. Clemens's former teammate, longtime friend, and once-and-perhaps-future pitching coach, is convinced the Rocket will seriously consider staging his final act in Boston. -- Boston Globe Garret Anderson's condition, known as plantar fascitis, is causing constant pain, which the Angel left fielder described as worse than any nagging injury he's had in his 12-year career. It hurts most when he runs, but he's been able to block it out in the batter's box. -- Los Angeles Times After Saturday's game against the Cubs, Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols returned to the field to help Busch Stadium workers adjust the lights. Pujols had told teammates and expressed to stadium officials that late in night games he had trouble seeing in the batter's box because of the location of the shine from the new light stanchions. -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch The Orioles are expected to announce within days that third baseman Melvin Mora has agreed to a three-year contract extension. -- Washington Post David Wright's camp is not expected to entertain discussing a long-term contract until March 2007 at the earliest, after another year of spring-training arbitration cases and the market for young stars is further defined. -- New York Daily News Coco Crisp will miss his 15th game because of a broken knuckle at the base of his left index finger, a setback expected to keep him out of the Boston lineup for approximately three more weeks, according to manager Terry Francona. And, though the Sox open a three-game series here atop the AL East, Crisp's absence is being felt. -- Boston Globe A day after being removed from the Diamondbacks' starting rotation and placed in the bullpen, struggling pitcher Russ Ortiz could be headed for yet another move, this one to the disabled list. Ortiz, however, would have to agree to such a move and upon making his first public comments about the situation on Tuesday, that probably isn't going to happen. Ortiz said he was "surprised" and "confused," among other things, and thinks he was judged too quickly. -- Arizona Republic After losing two leads and two games in three straight substandard performances over eight days, Mariners reliever Eddie Guardado emphasizes that he feels fine. But he recently admitted his shoulder bothers him at times. -- Seattle Times The optimism that surrounded Cesar Izturis' seemingly fast recovery from reconstructive elbow surgery has been tempered. Any talk of him re-joining the Dodgers in May has ceased and now it appears that everyone would be happy if he is able to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment before June. Izturis had been throwing 180 feet but experienced soreness and cut back to 120 feet. He is building back in 10- to 20-foot increments and won't get back to 180 feet for about two weeks. -- Los Angeles Times Pirates power-hitting prospect Brad Eldred will miss at least four months and possibly the season, it was determined yesterday after he had surgery to repair a fracture and damaged ligament in his left thumb. The thumb will be in a splint for 6-8 weeks, after which Eldred can begin modest exercises. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Washington Nationals team doctor Bruce Thomas said yesterday that John Patterson is recovering well from a strained muscle in his forearm, but he still will miss his next start. -- Washington Post |
