Richard Childress and Kevin Harvick are close to a deal that would keep the driver with Richard Childress Racing well beyond the 2006 season. Harvick, in the final year of his contract with RCR, was considered a major target for Toyota, which is entering NASCAR's Nextel Cup series in 2007, especially after he voiced concerns late last season that his current team was not capable of winning a championship. Childress said he met with Harvick earlier this week and got most of the deal worked out.

With Harvick close to locking up a deal to remain at RCR, the free agent focus now turns to Dale Jarrett. Michael Waltrip turned the heat up on Jarrett this weekend at Talladega, Ala., when he admitted he is courting the veteran to drive for him next year. Waltrip will field two cars under the Toyota umbrella in 2007, one for himself and one for another driver. But Jarrett, who is in the final year of his contract at Robert Yates Racing, hasn't been in the mood to discuss his future.

A report states that Jarrett's teammate, Elliott Sadler, is frustrated and looking to join another team. One destination could be the Red Bull Racing Toyota team. Sadler admits he's frustrated with how this season has gone -- he's 14th in points -- but remains committed to Robert Yates Racing. Last June, Sadler signed a contract extension, along with sponsor M&M's, to remain with the team through the 2008 season.

Despite a disastrous season to date, Jeremy Mayfield said he foresees no major shakeup to his Evernham Motorsports team, which was reorganized late last year. "I don't expect any changes other than we might add a few people. Chris (Andrews, team director) and I have started to come together," Mayfield said.

Kyle Petty is looking for a sponsor for six to eight races to complete the sponsorship program for the No. 45 Petty Enterprises Dodge he drives in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Petty said Friday that a company he had a signed contract with fell through, but he would not name the company. He said he would still drive his car in the unsponsored races.

NASCAR race director David Hoots told drivers before the Aaron's 499 that the entire track -- not just the turns -- will be monitored for aggressive driving during Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. NASCAR had extra officials in the turns at the season-opening race at Daytona to watch for aggressive driving after criticism that bump-drafting had escalated to an unacceptable level.

The postponement of the Aaron's 499 until noon Monday also changes the schedule for Nextel Cup testing planned this week on the new $3 million repaving of Lowe's Motor Speedway. The test was originally set for Monday through Wednesday, with each team allowed to test on two of those days. Now, all teams will test Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

Jimmie Johnson was a late addition to Goodyear's tire test on the newly repaved surface at Lowe's Motor Speedway. A blown right-rear tire sent Johnson into the Turn 4 wall about 20 laps into Wednesday's session, destroying the car and sending the team home before enough data was gathered to help Goodyear prepare for the all-star race and Coca-Cola 600 in late May.

A small group of NASCAR officials planned to travel to Montreal this week to scout the city for a possible Busch Series race next season. NASCAR expanded into Mexico last year, and Canadian officials have been trying to get on the schedule. Spokesman Jim Hunter said series officials would tour several venues, and any expansion would be strictly for the lower-tier Busch Series.

The yearlong contest among five cities to land the NASCAR Hall of Fame wasn't nearly as close as racing executives led everyone to believe. Charlotte won over NASCAR officials early, newly released public documents indicate. Thousands of city records suggest that Charlotte emerged as NASCAR's top choice last fall. Even so, racing executives allowed four other cities to keep courting. The sport's tactic: Maintain public neutrality, while making private assurances to Charlotte.
