Pacers big man Jermaine O'Neal, mentally weary from two long seasons of frustration and controversy, allowed for the possibility he might not be a Pacer much longer. But with $82 million left on his contract over the next four years, he is extremely hard to trade, though the Knicks could be interested.

Bulls coach Scott Skiles and Heat forward Antoine Walker waged a war of words at the end of the first half of Thursday's playoff game. Skiles, who was questioning why a foul had not been called on Walker. Walker told the coach to "Quit your whining." Skiles shouted back to Walker that he had been ''whining the whole series.'' At that point, according to those near the altercation, Walker used a derogatory term for a homosexual followed by an expletive.

Bears safety Chris Harris was escorted by United Center security from his seat behind the Miami Heat bench during the fourth quarter of Thursday night's Game 6. According to security personnel, Harris and Miami Heat forward Alonzo Mourning began exchanging words. Harris reportedly asked Mourning why he wasn't in the game and Mourning turned around and responded angrily. A couple of fans were ejected and Harris was moved to another area of the arena.

Bulls management will be watching closely to see if Tyson Chandler stays in town and devotes himself tirelessly to off-season conditioning. Chandler took a lot of criticism from Scott Skiles for reporting to training camp out of shape after spending the summer in his native California.

Former Bulls forward Antonio Davis, traded to New York on the eve of training camp, was at Game 6 and visited with a few Bulls outside the locker room. He said he's undecided about playing another NBA season.

If Pacers coach Rick Carlisle did one of the league's great coaching jobs one year ago, keeping his team together after the brawl, he flat-out lost this group, in large part because players perceived that he had different rules for different players.

The contracts of Celtics assistant coaches Jim Brewer and Paul Pressey will not be renewed for next season, a team source said yesterday. At this point, it is unclear if the Celtics will add assistants. Most NBA teams operate with 4-5 assistants. Without Brewer and Pressey, the Celtics have three full-time assistant coaches.

After Jason Kidd launched two 3-point air balls and was embarrassed defensively by Anthony Johnson, the Nets captain retreated into the locker room at halftime and shed his uniform as if it were contaminated. "My whole uniform ... shoes, wristband," Kidd said of his spontaneous makeover.
