With Victor Zambrano out for the season, the Mets will need another frontline starting pitcher. The most sensible maneuver is a deal for Florida's Dontrelle Willis, even if it costs Lastings Milledge. "No chance," one person in the Mets' loop said yesterday. -- Newsday Sources say the Dodgers will explore trading Odalis Perez to the Mets. The Dodgers tried to trade him during the off-season, but no one was willing to take on his salary. -- Los Angeles Times The Mets are expected to promote Jeremi Gonzalez from Triple-A Norfolk to take a start in Milwaukee this weekend, but that figures to be only a temporary plug for Victor Zambrano's rotation spot. -- New York Daily News According to a published report, the Mets are planning to exercise a team option for 2007 in Tom Glavine's contract for $11 million. In the last two springs, the Mets restructured Glavine's four-year deal to free up payroll and add both a player option and a team option for next season. -- New York Post General manager Allard Baird left the Royals' traveling party early Sunday to return to Kansas City amid a continuing swirl of speculation that he is about to be fired. Sources throughout baseball said high-level club officials have made back-channel contacts suggesting a possible front-office overhaul. An announcement could come as soon as today, and sources close to the situation said the issue is unlikely to linger beyond the three-day home stand. -- Kansas City Star Contrary to published reports, the Dodgers have not made an inquiry about the availability of Pirates 1B/OF Craig Wilson. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette There is reason to believe the Pirates might soon be on the market. Kevin McClatchy has hinted he might want to sell after the All-Star Game. If McClatchy could get a sale price in excess of $200 million, he might be willing to leave. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Kerry Wood made his biggest step back to date, striking out 12 of the 18 batters he faced Sunday night in his first rehabilitation start. Wood walked one and allowed a hit in five scoreless innings against the Lansing Lugnuts, the Class A affiliate of the Blue Jays. -- Chicago Sun-Times |
