Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would be interested in owning the Cubs. I know this because he said so, by e-mail, responding quicker to my questions than it takes Andy MacPhail to remove his tinted sunglasses and Dusty Baker to make a pitching change. -- Chicago Sun-Times There's one person who could have the most influence over Barry Bonds possibly returning next season to pursue Hank Aaron's home-run record. It's Nikolai Bonds, the slugger's 16-year-old son. -- Palm Beach Post Twins center fielder Torii Hunter would prefer to stay with the team long-term. Hunter said that he would be glad to negotiate his 2007 salary and maybe take some deferred compensation and work things out so that he can play one or two years in the Twins' new ballpark. -- Minneapolis Star Tribune Yankees scout Jeff Wetherby's presence around the Phillies over the weekend prompted speculation he was looking at outfielders Pat Burrell and Bobby Abreu. However, the Phillies are looking for starting pitching and that's the Yankees' No. 1 priority. -- New York Post Monroe High School lefthander Danny Almonte has been invited by the Yankees to attend a pre-draft workout at the Stadium on Thursday morning. But according to a source, Almonte, who's pitching today for Monroe, may not be able to attend if his team is still alive in the PSAL playoffs due to league rules against working out for MLB teams in season. -- New York Daily News Reliever Eric Gagne is scheduled to be activated for Thursday's game at Dodger Stadium against the Philadelphia Phillies. -- Los Angeles Times David Wells has made better progress than he thought, but his attempt to show that he could make his scheduled start tomorrow didn't convince the Red Sox, who are scrambling for a starter. Manager Terry Francona said the team was not ready to place Wells on the 15-day disabled list, and Wells has said he doesn't believe he'd need that much down time. -- Boston Globe Derek Jeter left yesterday's game in the fifth inning with what Joe Torre called a "mild sprain" of his right hand. The manager wouldn't rule out the possibility that Jeter could sit out tonight's game against the Tigers, but added that it's "more probable that he'll play." -- New York Daily News Cubs pitcher Mark Prior said his strained right shoulder is starting to feel closer to normal after a rehab start Monday for the Class A Peoria Chiefs. The 25-year-old right-hander threw 44 pitches, 28 for strikes, topping out at 90 mph in two innings. -- Chicago Sun-Times Lefthander Cole Hamels is scheduled to make a rehab start Thursday in single-A Lakewood. That's even after the Phillies placed righthander Jon Lieber on the 15-day disabled list last night with a strained left groin. Hamels is eligible to be activated Saturday, which is Lieber's next turn in the rotation, but it appears Hamels is not an option for Saturday's game in Los Angeles. -- Philadelphia Inquirer | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
