A league source with intimate knowledge of the applicable NCAA regulations tells us that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis might have rendered quarterback Brady Quinn and other incoming seniors ineligible if, as ProFootballTalk.com previously has reported, Weis has directed the seniors with designs on pro football to pick their agents before the start of the 2006 season.

Reserve quarterback Alex Mortensen will transfer from Arkansas to Division I-AA Samford University in time for the 2006 season, Razorback coach Houston Nutt said Sunday. He was third on the Arkansas depth chart at the position at the conclusion of spring training this year -- after Casey Dick and Robert Johnson -- and also faced potential competition from incoming freshman Mitch Mustain, who was one of the nation's most sought-after recruits.

Jermaine Doster, the younger brother of former Commodores running back Kwane Doster, who was shot and killed during Christmas break in 2004, has committed to play football for Vanderbuilt starting in 2007.

Now that North Dakota has jumped to NCAA Division I status, don't be surprised if South Dakota makes a similar announcement and for the entire North Central Conference to become Division 1-AA within the next several years.

Henry "Turtle" Thomas, former Louisiana State recruiting coordinator, and Andy Stankiewicz, whose major league career included stops with the New York Yankees and Diamondbacks, are joining the Arizona State baseball staff. Pat Murphy, going into his 13th season, is replacing Jay Sferra, at ASU for 11 years, and expanding his staff. Tim Esmay is remaining and will become assistant head coach.

Officials with the Houston Texans' Lone Star Entertainment wing and the Harris County Houston Sports Authority will meet with NCAA officials Tuesday in an effort to win certification for a new college bowl to replace the financially troubled Houston Bowl. If the groups are successful, Lone Star Entertainment will be in charge of staging the game this December, and sports authority officials will handle hospitality and other bowl events.
