Apparently some in the Orioles organization are ready to deal their starting shortstop before the July 31 trade deadline. The club, according to another Orioles source, would ask for a major league pitcher as part of any package for Miguel Tejada. -- Washington Post Orioles executives and manager Sam Perlozzo have met several times, though not in the past month, to discuss how to deal with Miguel Tejada's tardiness in arriving for games. One team source said Baltimore has tried to fine Tejada, but those fines have been ignored. The source said it was possible team officials had not pushed Tejada to pay the fines or disciplined Tejada publicly because they did not want to risk alienating him or hurting his trade value. -- Washington Post GM Brian Sabean would prefer to acquire a hitter whom the Giants can control beyond 2006 -- Craig Wilson and Miguel Cabrera fit that category -- but he said Sunday he would consider a rent-a-player. -- San Francisco Chronicle The Dodgers appeared close to acquiring Tampa Bay left-hander Mark Hendrickson. The deal also is believed to involve a swap of catchers, with Dioner Navarro going to the Devil Rays for Toby Hall. -- Los Angeles Daily News The Dodgers do not expect closer Eric Gagne to return before the All-Star break and would not be surprised if he cannot return for several weeks thereafter. "We're back to square one," trainer Stan Johnston said Monday. -- Los Angeles Times Nationals scouting director Dana Brown and player personnel director Bob Boone have both seen New York Yankees Class AA affiliate Trenton over the past two weeks, an indication of the Nationals' hope that the Yankees might eventually be willing to deal hard-throwing right-hander Philip Hughes as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. -- Washington Post Once the Cubs decide to pack it in, the Marlins should consider taking Juan Pierre off their hands. They won't have to give back Ricky Nolasco, and they might even get the Cubs to pay the bulk of the remaining money. -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel The Cubs spent most of the off-season trying unsuccessfully to trade infielder Todd Walker, then wound up giving him the second base job at the end of spring training. With July approaching, Walker says he believes the Cubs will try to trade him again. -- Chicago Tribune | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
