Here's an interesting rumor: The Astros get Marlins ace Dontrelle Willis and have to give up only starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez and Round Rock outfielder Charleton Jimerson. Of course, if the Marlins were interested in pulling off such a trade, they'd probably insist on Double-A outfield sensation Hunter Pence and Triple-A ace Jason Hirsch. -- Austin American-Statesman

With Dontrelle Willis' salary likely to rise above $6 million in 2007, his future here remains in question. -- Miami Herald

"Day-to-day'' is no longer a boring cliche with the Cubs. It's the tense reality of manager Dusty Baker's increasingly precarious position. Baker could be in his final days as the disheveled Cubs dived to 4-17 in their last 21 games with a 7-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Tuesday. Reading between the lines of general manager Jim Hendry's pregame assessment of the team's continued declining situation, Baker is in dire straits. -- Chicago Sun-Times

Major-league sources acknowledged Tuesday that the Cubs have been contacted by multiple teams interested in trading for pitcher Greg Maddux. While the Dodgers have long been rumored as a team that would be eager to acquire Maddux, they won't be alone in the pursuit. -- Chicago Sun-Times

If the Yankees can make a trade before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, Joe Torre would prefer a hitter. -- Journal News

One rumor making the rounds had the White Sox interested in trading for Brewers centerfielder Brady Clark, but general manager Doug Melvin said the Sox had not called about Clark. -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

There is a rumor that White Sox GM Ken Williams is trying to get center fielder/third baseman Chone Figgins from the Los Angeles Angels, but Ozzie Guillen said no moves are close to becoming reality. -- Daily Herald

Before the Angels designated Jeff Weaver for assignment last week, general manager Bill Stoneman asked the Mets for prized outfield prospect Lastings Milledge, baseball sources said. The Mets would consider trading Milledge for a top starter but not an innings-eater like Weaver, sources said. -- Los Angeles Times

The Angels appear to have little leverage in trading Jeff Weaver, since they must release him at week's end if they do not trade him by then. The Dodgers, Cardinals, Padres, Mets, Brewers, Red Sox and Rangers all are thought to have some interest. The Reds and Diamondbacks could consider Weaver too. -- Los Angeles Times
