Charles Wang once floated the idea of sticking a Sumo wrestler in net to play goalie and many around the NHL nearly busted a gut from laughter. Yesterday Wang stuck a goalie in the GM's office, and the owner who prides himself in thinking outside the box was thought to be outside his mind. The Islanders quickly found a replacement for Garth Snow, the backup goalie promoted to GM this week, in signing Wade Dubielewicz to a one-year deal yesterday. Terms of the deal were not released. The Panthers are on the verge of solidifying their goaltending tandem by signing likely future Hall of Famer Ed Belfour. Belfour passed a physical Wednesday morning and could be introduced by the Panthers today as a backup to Alex Auld. If Ed Belfour accepts an offer from Florida, the Red Wings, who re-signed veteran Chris Osgood earlier this month, probably will wait to land a goaltender via trade later this summer -- or perhaps even during the season. Buffalo, San Jose, Anaheim and possibly Montreal and Philadelphia are among the teams looking to deal a goalie. Coyotes executives likely will be monitoring the salary arbitration case of New Jersey Devils center Scott Gomez on Friday. The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported that if the arbitrator sides with Gomez, the Devils may have to trade him because of salary-cap concerns. Phoenix has wanted to acquire Gomez for years and is still seeking a top-six forward to add this off-season. Craig MacTavish has been rewarded for leading the Edmonton Oilers on an improbable path to the Stanley Cup final. The Oilers have signed MacTavish to a four-year contract extension, a source told The Canadian Press yesterday. The source said the deal would be formally announced today. With his post-concussion symptoms lingering, Flyers center Keith Primeau has scrapped his summer plan to spend a month in Finland practicing with a team that includes fellow Flyer Sami Kapanen. Primeau's hope was to prepare for a comeback by scraping off the rust that has accumulated during nearly two years of inactivity and easing back into contact. Still no word on the Simon Gagne front. The Flyers and their prized restricted free agent are no closer to a deal than when the sides talked more than a week ago. The Thrashers' last two unsigned restricted free agents -- goalie Kari Lehtonen and center Niko Kapanen -- could sign soon. Both rejected their qualifying offers (about $1 million for Lehtonen and $495,000 for Kapanen, who has arbitration rights). General manager Don Waddell said that he and the agent for Lehtonen, Ottawa-based Larry Kelly, are trying to arrange a face-to-face bargaining session for Thursday or Friday. Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice is expected to add an old friend to his coaching staff. Randy Ladouceur, who worked with Maurice with the Carolina Hurricanes, is being tabbed to become an assistant with the Leafs. The Ducks now play at the Honda Center, not the Arrowhead Pond. Honda agreed to pay $60 million over 15 years for the right to slap its name on the Anaheim arena, a source familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
