Alex Rodriguez laughed when a trade rumor that circulated through Wall Street yesterday was relayed to him. It had the Yankees third baseman going to the Phillies as part of a blockbuster trade for Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Tom Gordon and David Bell, with the Yankees supposedly also sending Melky Cabrera and a player to be named. -- New York Post The Angels are interested enough in Shea Hillenbrand that General Manager Bill Stoneman spent a fair amount of Thursday investigating the circumstances surrounding the Toronto infielder's falling out with the Blue Jays. -- Los Angeles Times Shea Hillenbrand is likely to be traded to the Dodgers or Padres. The Angels were interested in Hillenbrand a month ago. Hillenbrand isn't expected to clear waivers if he isn't dealt, which means the Yankees won't get a shot at him. They could view Hillenbrand as a better first-base option than Andy Phillips. -- New York Post Contrary to reports in the Toronto Sun, the Twins are not interested in acquiring infielder Shea Hillenbrand. -- St. Paul Pioneer Press While industry buzz was that the Mets and Phillies were engaged in talks that would include a Bobby Abreu-for-Lastings Milledge swap, Mets insiders said yesterday that deal seemed unlikely. -- New York Daily News If the Yankees do make a move, it would probably be for a relief pitcher. They have had talks with the Cubs about right-hander Scott Williamson. Roberto Hernandez of Pittsburgh is another possibility if the Pirates lessen their demands. -- Journal News Tim Wakefield's rib stress fracture will pull him off the mound for at least three weeks. The Red Sox have not announced a starter -- perhaps Kason Gabbard will be promoted from Pawtucket, or the team could make a deal -- to fill the knuckleballer's slot tomorrow in Seattle. -- Boston Globe Nationals right fielder Jose Guillen is placed on the disabled list with an injury that could cost him the rest of the season, and GM Jim Bowden is saying he can't be traded now. -- Washington Post Joe Randa is skeptical he will be traded, no matter how hard the Pirates try. But there is a chance. The Padres are desperate for help at the position and, after cutting Vinny Castilla. The Brewers are seeking a third baseman after learning Corey Koskie is having complications with a concussion. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Cesar Izturis again held his ground, declining to rejoin the Dodgers while his wife remained in the hospital after having a baby by caesarean section three days earlier. -- Los Angeles Times | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
