White Sox GM Ken Williams didn't deny rumors Sunday that his team is among four 'finalists' in the running for Washington left fielder Alfonso Soriano. Believed also to be in the bidding are the Tigers, the Yankees and the Angels. Dontrelle Willis' final pitch Sunday resulted in an inning-ending double play. But, barring a knock-their-socks-off offer the front office can't refuse and doesn't expect to receive between now and the nonwaiver trade deadline one week from today, it probably wasn't Willis' last pitch in a Marlins uniform in South Florida. The Yankees have made an offer to the Phillies for outfielder Bobby Abreu that was immediately turned down because it didn't include major league-ready talent or top prospect Phil Hughes. Sources indicate that the Yanks have soured on Phillies outfielder Bobby Abreu for several reasons -- most notably concern over whether he's got the emotional makeup necessary to succeed in New York. Considering the recent struggles of Alex Rodriguez -- who Yankee officials are quick to say they believe ultimately will be able to handle the scrutiny -- questions about a player's fortitude are all the more important. In Abreu's case, it seems to be a critical piece of the Yankees' evaluation. The tools that attracted Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and his staff to Wily Mo Peņa are the same tools that have teams that are out of contention eyeing Peņa now. The Indians are looking for a righthanded corner outfielder with power. They could part with Jake Westbrook or Paul Byrd. Curt Schilling said he believes the Red Sox are trying to trade for more pitching, but predicted that if general manager Theo Epstein makes a deal, it will probably be for a fourth- or fifth-type starter rather than a front-line pitcher. The return of Sandy Alomar Jr. means the White Sox understand they need immediate improvement from their starting pitchers. Alomar played a role in Mark Buehrle's development and could get a chance to try to help Buehrle snap out of his worst slump since 2003. He'll also probably get a chance to work with Javier Vazquez. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti made the Sandy Alomar Jr. deal primarily to open a roster spot for outfielder Jason Repko, who has completed his minor league rehabilitation assignment and will start in center field tonight against the San Diego Padres. The Cubs are trying to trade veteran infielder Todd Walker before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Walker becomes a free agent after the season, as does Phil Nevin, who also is on the block. Center fielder Juan Pierre also becomes a free agent, but the Cubs might be interested in re-signing him. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
