Avery Johnson is looking forward to coaching the Mavericks during the remaining three seasons of his contract, and any tension between him and owner Mark Cuban has been exaggerated, a source close to the team said Sunday. There has been speculation that Johnson's contract could be a source of irritation for Johnson. Anthony Johnson fills the Mavericks' need for a third point guard behind Jason Terry and Devin Harris. Johnson should see significant playing time next season because of coach Avery Johnson's desire to often play two-point guard lineups. Apparently, the Timberwolves are hoping that the market for big men slows down so they can sign either Lorenzen Wright or Reggie Evans, who are asking more money than owner Glen Taylor has to offer. Kendrick Perkins, who is beginning his fourth season, could be next on the Celtics' contract extension agenda. The team and Perkins have until the end of October to see if they can reach an agreement. To date there have been only cursory (and cordial) negotiations between the Celtics and Perkins's agent, Bob Myers. Undrafted Yakhouba Diawara is about to sign a guaranteed two-year, $1.1 million contract with the Nuggets. Diawara said Dallas dangled a two-year, $1.8 million deal. But Diawara, who played for the Nuggets in the Vegas Summer League, had given coach George Karl his word he would sign. The sign-and-trade deal that would have sent 76ers guard John Salmons to the Toronto Raptors fell apart Friday when the four-year veteran opted out of the arrangement. Billy King, the Sixers' president and general manager, was asked whether there was a possibility that Salmons would return to the team. King said, 'Not at this time." Free-agent guard Fred Jones will sign with the Raptors, his agent said yesterday. The Pacers made a qualifying offer to Jones earlier this summer. But Jones' agent, Bill Duffy, told The Associated Press they rescinded the offer last week, making Jones an unrestricted free agent. With 12 players on the payroll and just one notable free agent on their roster, Chris Wilcox, the Sonics aren't in the market to add new players. Wilcox, a restricted free agent, isn't likely to receive the big payday he hoped for. In his first public comments since his arrest, Shawn Kemp told The Seattle Times there was marijuana in his truck on Friday, but he claimed that he has not used drugs since April 2004. Kemp also said he would take a drug test anytime and that he still believes he can return to the NBA. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
