A number of stock-car crews have been playing with tire tricks the past year, trying to prevent excessive air pressure build-up and improve handling over long runs. Two of the tricks have been installing illegal air-pressure bleeders in the valve stems, and the drilling of very tiny holes in the sidewalls, which is not specifically illegal. So when NASCAR officials confiscated Clint Bowyer's left-front tire at Martinsville, there were a lot of questions in the Nextel Cup garage at Pocono Speedway.

Rusty Wallace said he plans for son Steve to run at entire Busch season next year, then "hopefully go Cup racing in 2007." For now, Steve said, he is concentrating on a shorter term goal: to become the first Wallace to win a race at Gateway, which the family considers its home track.

There's no denying that Robert Yates Racing is in trouble, and the lack of drivers beating on the door to drive the Nos. 88 and 38 Fords is evidence of the morass. Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler have complained that RYR lacks the engineering that the best teams have. RYR employs six full-time engineers, while most top teams have 15 to 20. After the Roush-Yates Ford engine collaboration, the Roush teams got better and the Yates teams steadily fell behind.

NASCAR will take its first major step toward switching to unleaded fuel this weekend when the Busch Series cars will run it at St. Louis. The Busch cars will have unleaded fuel for the next four races. The change has created extra work for the engine builders.

Kenny Wallace said Tony Stewart, who was penalized for aggressive driving after running into Clint Bowyer, who then crashed into Carl Edwards, remains NASCAR's loosest cannon.

Tracy Hines has decided to resign his duties as a part-time driver for FitzBradshaw Racing. The decision was made after Hines was pulled from the No. 12 car before this weekend's race at Gateway. Hines, who has competed in both the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, will most likely return to running USAC races until another seat opens up for him in the NASCAR ranks.

MB2 Motorsports will announce today that Bobby Ginn has purchased Nelson Bowers' majority stake in the team. Ginn is the president of the Ginn Company, which builds and operates resort communities.
