The Bears have no quarterback controversy swirling around Rex Grossman and Brian Griese. They intend to keep it that way. The Bears have made it clear that Grossman is ahead of Griese on the depth chart. Saints rookie Reggie Bush likely will start in Saturday night's preseason opener at Tennessee. Deuce McAllister will sit out as a precautionary measure while he continues to progress from last year's knee injury. Bush is expected to play a little more than one quarter, along with the rest of the starting unit. A three-year, $18-million extension to Deion Branch's existing deal has been declined, quarterback Tom Brady has told ESPN he's asking Branch to report and the Patriots have maintained their poker face. So far the Branch camp has tried -- and failed -- to spend money to make money. The Jets continue monitoring running backs around the league. The latest indications out of Denver are that Ron Dayne would be easier to pry from the Broncos than Tatum Bell. With Curtis Martin's career in jeopardy, the Jets are eager to see if Derrick Blaylock and Cedric Houston can do the job. If not, they almost certainly will trade for a veteran. The Redskins' Ladell Betts has emerged as a possibility. The Atlanta Falcons are the leading candidate to trade for Ashley Lelie, who has a year left on his contract and will be a free agent in March if he plays this season. LenDale White was involved in two separate scuffles with veteran Titans safety Donnie Nickey, the second of which saw the volatile running back spit in the defensive back's face. He appeared to confront Nickey, and the defensive back removed his helmet and swung it at White. If Bears running back P.J. Pope pans out, it would make trading Thomas Jones in the offseason easier. Pope will get a lot of work starting in the second quarter and in the second game, with Jones a possibility to return for the Aug. 25 game against Arizona. An Eagles source said he'd be surprised if the Browns did not inquire about what it would take to acquire Hank Fraley. It's only educated speculation, but the Eagles obviously need some depth at running back, and Cleveland probably would be willing to part with Lee Suggs. To be clear, Shaun Alexander is healthy and not dealing with any nagging injuries. Which is exactly the way coach Mike Holmgren wants to keep it. That's why Alexander is being held out of most team drills so far in camp, getting most of his work in practice in individual and positional work. Johnnie Morton is not in anyone's camp right now. Morton expressed a desire to continue playing. "There has been interest from a few teams: New England, Atlanta, Seattle and Dallas," Morton said. Matt Schaub and T.J. Duckett spent the summer unsure if they would be back with the Falcons. Teams called, checking to see if either player was available in a trade. The Falcons held on to both, although maybe not for long. Solid showings, beginning with Friday's preseason opener against the Patriots, could bring security, larger roles and sizeable contracts in Atlanta or some place else. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
