Phil Mickelson is considering carrying two drivers at 7,561-yard Medinah this week, a repeat of the strategy he used to win the Masters.

PGA commissioner Tim Finchem said Tuesday the Tour is reconsidering rotating the former Western Open out of the Chicago area every other year because of the strong adverse reaction from fans and players.

People wondered how it was that club pro Mike Small ended up playing a practice round with Mickelson. They bumped into each other Sunday and the lefthander said if there was anything Small needed, just ask. "I said, 'Well, OK. I'm looking for a game,' " said Small, who is the golf coach at the University of Illinois.

Mickelson's victory last year at Baltusrol made him the host of the Tuesday night dinner for past PGA champions, and with that comes the responsibility of giving each champion a gift. Rich Beem gave everyone Ostrich cowboy boots. Tiger Woods' gift was a personalized humidor one year, and a clock showing the time zones of all four majors in 2000. And Mickelson? "We went back and found all the past newspaper clippings from the day they were born, and all the newspaper clippings from the week of tournament they won," he said. He and his wife, Amy, created leather-bound books to hold the clippings.

Although no one goes to the extremes that Mickelson does as far as on-site preparation, his successful approach has caused some players to make changes in their routines. Jeff Sluman, the 1988 PGA champion, is trying something different this week. He hasn't competed the past two weeks; he usually plays the week before a major. He spent two days at Medinah Country Club last week and got a good feel for the course. He spent Monday and Tuesday fine-tuning his game.

Sluman always hosts a few fellow players at his Hinsdale home during the Western Open, and is doing the same this week. Davis Love and Chris DiMarco are this week's guests. DiMarco said he has yet to bowl a game on the bowling lane Sluman had built, but they've taken full advantage of Sluman's extensive wine cellar.

Billy Mayfair, who had surgery two weeks ago after receiving a diagnosis of testicular cancer, has recuperated and will be in the field at the PGA Championship. Mayfair said the cancer was caught in the first stage.

Billy Andrade was, for a short while yesterday, ranked No. 1. When he lost that status, he was thrilled. It meant that he was off the list of alternates and into the 88th PGA Championship.

Arnold Palmer's record in Ryder Cup matches is nearly unmatched among American players, with a record 22 victories, including 11 singles victories, in six appearances. Only Billy Casper (23 1/2) has accumulated more points than Palmer (22) in Ryder Cup competition. Maybe the U.S. team will feel some of the karma when the Ryder Cup is contested next month at the K Club in Straffan, County Kildaire, Ireland -- the course Palmer designed in 1991.

The Ohio Golf Association finally has come up with the uniform ball all 72 players will use in the inaugural Champions Tournament that begins Tuesday at Windy Knoll in Springield, Ohio, though the manufacturer of the ball remains a mystery. The OGA submitted the ball for approval to the United States Golf Association earlier this year and was told it was on the conforming list of golf balls.
