The Red Sox are one of at least three teams that have inquired about Baltimore veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins. The Phillies had just concluded batting practice when Manuel wagged his index finger and gave the former manager a tongue-lashing. Now an adviser to general manager Pat Gillick, Green criticized Manuel's job performance during a radio interview several weeks ago. -- Philadelphia Inquirer Shawn Green is healthy, yet for the second straight game the right fielder was out of the Diamondbacks starting lineup, fueling speculation he might be on his last leg in Arizona. -- Arizona Republic The Cubs told a Padres executive in 2002 that they were interested in hiring Bruce Bochy as their manager. The feeler went nowhere, and the Cubs went on to hire Dusty Baker. -- San Diego Union-Tribune The Cubs are not working on deals to re-sign center fielder Juan Pierre or to rework third baseman Aramis Ramirez's deal. Ramirez has an 'out' clause after this season. -- Daily Southtown Everybody seems to believe Barry Zito is in his final months with the A's. On Tuesday, even the owner hinted as much when asked about the chances of re-signing the left-hander for 2007. -- San Francisco Chronicle Despite what seems like a sizable deficit in the American League West -- the Angels trail the Oakland Athletics by 5 1/2 games, the third-largest difference in the majors between first- and second-place teams -- General Manager Bill Stoneman isn't worried about losing his job in the offseason. -- Riverside Press-Enterprise The report on Pedro Martinez was still undetermined last night. Martinez was in New York yesterday being examined. PR man Jay Horwitz reported that Dr. Struan Coleman was still looking at Martinez's results and there would not be more of an update until today. -- New York Post Minutes after learning that he had been demoted, Chad Harville held nothing back in a heat-of-the-moment rant that blasted the organization. He made it clear that he does not want to remain a Devil Ray. -- Tampa Tribune The Astros had 10 days to trade or release Preston Wilson, but decided to cut ties when they were unable to work out a trade. The Astros and Rockies had talked about a deal, but the Rockies signed veteran third baseman Vinny Castilla instead. -- Houston Chronicle Zack Greinke forced a decision on the Royals, and that decision is he stays at Class AA Wichita for the duration of its season. Thereafter, a September call-up is a growing possibility. Geinke is 7-2 with a 4.36 ERA overall in 15 starts for Wichita since returning from leave to deal with personal issues. -- Kansas City Star | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
