As the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Evgeni Malkin continues, the NHL is confident the Pittsburgh Penguins won't break ranks and get the Russia star on board by throwing money at his Metallurg Magnitogorsk Russian club team.

Evgeni Malkin is safe with his agents, completely secluded behind a wall of silence. He had a Canadian visa in his passport before he left for training camp, and he's most likely squirreled away in Toronto where his agents, despite reports from the Calgary office about a vacation, can only let him skate in secret for so long before words leaks out.

Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar said that looking back on his conversation with Evgeni Malkin just over a week ago, the young Russian phenom sounded upset. The veteran blueliner said that when a contract is signed at 3 a.m., as he recently learned that Malkin's was, there had to be some kind of pressure involved.

It appears Jeremy Roenick will not be the only 30-something, used-to-be goal-scoring threat who will try to revive his career with the Coyotes. Right wing Owen Nolan, who hasn't played in the NHL since he injured a knee during a game near the end of the 2003-04 season, is close to signing a one-year contract with Phoenix. The deal is expected to be completed today.

Owen Nolan's long and winding grievance against the Maple Leafs is settled. Various sources reported a deal was reached yesterday on a disputed $12.1 million U.S. in salary from 2004-05 and '05-06. Nolan says he is pain-free and at a trim 205 pounds after surgery last year to correct the knee problem.

Buffalo's Ryan Miller is still unsigned and probably seeking a salary in the $3 million range. Don't expect Martin Biron to be traded until the Miller issue is resolved, and don't be surprised if Miller holds out of camp. Keeping Biron is the Sabres' leverage.

Few people on the planet know better than Garth Snow how many holes the Islanders' defense corps had going into the summer. The backup goalie-turned-GM continued to bulk up the blue line yesterday when veteran Sean Hill was signed to a one-year deal.

The Ducks addressed their need for veteran depth on defense Tuesday, signing unrestricted free agent Ian Moran to a one-year contract worth $450,000. Moran is expected to join journeyman Joe DiPenta and prospect Shane O'Brien in competition for time behind the club's anticipated top-four defense of Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Francois Beauchemin and Sean O'Donnell.
